The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (#DESNZ) announce their partnership to make #CP1 (2020), the recognised Code of Practice for heat networks in the UK, accessible to all, free of charge. CP1 (2020), a publication produced by #CIBSE, serves as a comprehensive guide offering technical guidance and establishing voluntary minimum standards for UK #heatnetworks. Widely acknowledged as the go-to resource in the industry, CP1 (2020) has garnered widespread acceptance and support since its last update in 2020. It has been utilised by industry professionals as a vital technical reference and by developers to set standards for their new heat networks. Previously available exclusively to CIBSE members, CP1 (2020) is now accessible to all stakeholders, thanks to the generous funding provided by DESNZ. This collaborative effort aims to democratise access to crucial information outlined in CP1 (2020) and facilitate better preparedness for the forthcoming heat network regulations in 2025. CIBSE and DESNZ are not only removing the paywall but also actively collaborating to update the voluntary Code of Practice throughout 2024. This joint initiative ensures continuous alignment with the evolving regulatory landscape, particularly with the #HeatNetwork Technical Assurance Scheme (#HNTAS) standards under development. The next version of CP1 is scheduled to be freely available for download in 2025. Nottingham Energiesprong retrofit is shortlisted for a 2024 Housing Design Award! Great to show 20 judges from different disciplines around the completed scheme in glorious sunshine last week and discuss some of the challenges of social housing retrofit. The project pioneered the Energiesprong approach in the UK. An offsite factory was established locally to supply cladding panels incorporating insulation, double glazing, and thermal improvements. The retrofit is completed in 12 days with residents remaining at home. Comfort and energy performance is assured by the contractor through post-completion monitoring. Measured performance (Pilot) shows average space heating: 58 kWh/m2/yr (within 2% of target value). Average solar PV production: 35 kWh/m2/yr per/home. That's why we've contributed to the Public Accounts Committee's enquiry into the decarbonisation of home heating across Great Britain, and we're pleased to continue work with policy markers on this vital issue. Our evidence highlights the critical need for aligning government policies with the practical realities of energy infrastructure development. As we transition to a greener future, here are some key points from our submission: - Policy Alignment and Infrastructure Needs: Ensuring policy targets align with the capability of both electricity and gas networks is essential for a smooth transition. - Capacity Challenges: With electricity demand expected to double by 2050, significant investment is required to enhance network capacity, reducing connection times and adapting to higher energy demands. - Future Homes Standard: The proposed standards for new homes starting in 2025 need careful integration, considering ongoing developments. It's crucial that existing infrastructure doesn't become redundant as energy requirements evolve. - Consumer Engagement: Engaging with consumers is vital. Ensure your business complies with this mandatory scheme to identify and report energy-saving opportunities. Key Deadlines: ➡ 5th June 2024: Register your account on the compliance portal. ➡ 6th August 2024: Submit your compliance notification. What is ESOS? ➡ ESOS requires large UK businesses to report their energy use and identify potential savings. The scheme runs in four-year phases, and we’re currently in Phase 3. Does Your Business Need to Comply? If your business met the following criteria as of 31 December 2022, you need to comply: ➡ 250+ employees ➡ Annual turnover > £44 million AND balance sheet total > £38 million What Should You Be Doing Now? ➡ Appoint a Qualified Lead Assessor: Ensure a qualified professional reviews or conducts your energy audits. ➡ Measure Your Energy Consumption: Use a 12-month reference period ending before 5 June 2024. ➡ Calculate Energy Intensity Ratios: Include ratios like kWh per square meter for buildings. ➡ Decide on De Minimis Exemptions: You can exclude up to 5% of your energy consumption. ➡ Prepare Your Audit Report and Action Plan: Include energy-saving recommendations and implementation plans. Important Reminder: If you qualified for ESOS Phase 2 but do not meet Phase 3 criteria, submit a DNQ (Do Not Qualify) notification. Compliance Portal and Grace Period: The new “Manage your Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme” (MESOS) portal goes live on 19th March 2024.
