Commodity traders must improve preparations for margin calls by improving their liquidity risk management, including by holding more liquid assets and conducting stress tests, the Financial Stability Board (FSB) has said. Following an analysis of market disruptions, including the price volatility that caused “turmoil” in the commodities markets in 2022, the FSB has today issued several recommendations on how traders should increase their protection against liquidity stresses. Although the volatility of 2022 has faded away, there are currently signs of uncertainty in other commodities, particularly where rising demand or shortfalls in supply could cause prices to spike - including cocoa, coffee and copper. Hedge fund Brevan Howard is parting with an ex-JPMorgan MD @Alfreido Saitta's time at Brevan Howard appears to be coming to an end, but the hedge fund is still adding investment talent to other teams. Bloomberg reported yesterday that Brevan has shuttered Saitta's fund after it lost 4.9% in the first quarter following what appears to have been failed bets on falling rates. Saitta is leaving once the fund has been wound down, even though Louis Basger who ran another Brevan fund and lost 7.8%, is staying. Prior to joining Brevan Howard in 2011, Saitta was a managing director in rates trading at J.P. Morgan or five years. Before that, he was a director in short term interest rates trading at Citi After long years of rates traders moving from banks to hedge funds, Saitta's exit from Brevan Howard is a reminder that hedge funds are not an easy option. Traders have now started moving in the opposite direction. Yun Zhou a former macro portfolio manager at Brevan Howard, for example, recently reappeared as Citi as New York-based MD in rates options trading. While Brevan Howard has been ejecting underperforming portfolio managers, particularly in systematic macro, and cutting some middle office staff, it's also hiring. It recently added Leon Haack a London-based credit analyst from rival hedge fund Balyasny Asset Management L.P. Brevan Howard has two large key multi-manager funds: the Master fund, a macro fund with approximately $12bn in AUM, and the Alpha Strategies fund with approximately $12.5bn in AUM which is more relative value leaning with limited directional risk. Hard Coding the Prospectus Playbook into ETF Order-flow and Work-flow The prospectus, or offering memorandum, for an ETF can be long – the UK prospectus for Vanguard Funds plc runs to 573 pages. It may also be full of legalistic language that does not always seem easily or intuitively comprehensible, but it is the “bible” and needs to be carefully followed. The prospectus is the rulebook for an ETF, governing orders, fees, pricing, reviews, approvals, and much more. Rules can vary between share classes and listings. All sorts of fund attributes and controls embedded in the prospectus can be configured in COSMOS, the award-winning ETF creation, redemption, order-flow and work-flow platform from @ULTUMUS by @SIX. Barclays PLC (LSE:BARC) posted an expectedly robust set of first-quarter results today, though mortgage pressures were evidently the fly in the ointment. Firm-wide net interest income came to £1.55 billion, representing a year-on-year decrease of around 4%, while profit before tax for the group was £2.27 billion, down from £2.6 million last year. “Continued structural hedge momentum was more than offset by mortgage margin pressure and adverse deposit dynamics reflecting wider market trends,” said Barclays. Nonetheless, the profitable quarter is a thankful turnarund from the £111 million of losses penned in the previous quarter. Net interest margins in the UK consumer division were 3.09% compared to 3.2% in the first quarter of 2023. The UK corporate banking divisions saw NIMs fall 10 basis points to a flat 5%, while private banking and wealth management fell 11 basis points to 5.07%. Firm-wide CET1...
