Sant Jordi (Saint George's day) is such important celebration in Catalonia. 23rd April is one of the most important days in Catalan culture, when people exchange books and roses. Preparations for the Day of Books and Roses begins well before April 23. In Barcelona, the city is papered with posters in all neighbourhoods, and the central activity is in La Rambla, the Passeig de Gràcia, and Rambla de Catalunya. On the sidewalks tents are set up from which books and red roses are sold. Bookstores bring their materials outside, and various associations, unions, and schools line the streets at tables. Also, there are small tables of illustrators and authors selling and signing their books. Even though there is considerable activity in the streets, bookstores are also crowded on this day with lines extending outside. Since 1997 the official slogan of the day has been "A rose for a love, and a book forever". Schools in Catalonia prepare for the day with numerous activities related to books and literature. The day generates considerable economic activity for authors, publishers, and booksellers. For example, in Catalonia on April 23rd, 2016, more than 1,580,000 copies of 45,267 book titles were sold, and 54 percent of these were in the Catalan language. Annually, approximately 8 percent of books sold in Catalonia—1.5 million—are sold on this day, as are a third of all roses. #barcelona #catalunya #festivities #spain #mandarinoriental #luxury #tourism https://lnkd.in/digXkYtR

In the hotel world, we are well used to seeing the word, sustainability, often mentioned to describe aspects of a property, and unfortunately not always deservedly. With today being Sustainable Gastronomy Day, a special mention to the hotel, that always comes to mind, when pondering this term. Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang is a haven for preservation and regenerative detail, from a century-old farmhouse to onsite rice production. As of 2023, 70% of the hotels food is locally sourced, with an emphasis on local vegetables. Rice is grown on the paddy field which is located at the heart of Phum Baitang, with a variety of vegetables and herbs also grown onsite. Lemongrass is picked and used for the hotel straws. 😩 Overtourism vs destination stewardship 🌤️ The case of overtourism presents a unique opportunity for a paradigm shift. There is a critical need to move from a model which measures success purely by visitor numbers / dollars spent ➡️ a model that also takes into consideration the well-being of residents, and the impact on the environment. As an industry, we need to learn how to measure the carrying capacity of a place, get more creative with how we disperse tourists (think off-the-beaten path itineraries or changing the narratives on ‘off’ seasons), before we love all our favourite places to death. ☠️ Tourist destinations need to be created in harmony with community needs, adopting a destination stewardship approach that seeks to maintain a happy community, whose natural and cultural assets remain protected, sustaining longer-term tourism that comfortably supports rather than exploits a destination. 🌿 https://lnkd.in/e-H4bN5x

A law passed in 2020 to tackle the over-consumption of alcohol in certain parts of the Balearics (Mallorca, Ibiza) has been reinforced by the introduction of greater restrictions on the sale of alcohol in some locations between 9:30pm and 8:00am. Other measures include banning party boats from certain areas on the islands and from picking up or disembarking passengers there. “Overtourism” and “excessive tourism” seem to be recurring themes in popular destinations, apparently leading some local authorities to enforce what some may perceive as ‘draconian’ measures in an effort to “correct uncivil attitudes.” Will such measures be successful? Or will they merely result in the problem migrating to other areas in Mallorca and Ibiza, or even other destinations? In the past twenty years, there has been a consistent growth in European luxury hotel stays, thanks to a continued increase in demand following the pandemic. Luxury hotel owners have responded to this demand by raising room prices, leading to record-breaking Average Daily Rates (ADRs), especially in major cities like London where prices have surged by up to 38% post-pandemic. This trend has also prompted a wave of expansion across Europe, with luxury brands strategically securing new locations through management contracts to take advantage of the changing market dynamics. Savills has compiled data on new openings from top luxury hotel providers such as Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, and Belmond. From 2023 to 2028, we anticipate a 52.8% increase in existing luxury hotel stock in Europe, resulting in around 4,000 new rooms. Prior to the pandemic, the industry experienced an average annual growth rate of 2.6% over the five years. Learn more:

A good article about the expansion of luxury brands into the hospitality sector. Last year so many luxury brands such as Christian Dior, Gucci, Lora Piana and many more made a take over in luxury hotels by rebranding pools and beach clubs around Europe. Armani Hotels and Bulgari Hotels have been already in the market for years, but new comers are in with the recently opened Chopard Hotel Place Vendôme, soon a Louis Vuitton Hotel on Champs Élysées in Paris and a Gucci Hotel in Dubaï. Should we expect to see a Chanel or a Hermes Hotel in the future?
