Inspecting the moulding process of our Circuit protection range. Always facinating to see how small automations can make the difference in the process. While injecting the next sets the pick and place matches the two half’s and stack them ready for quality inspection 🧐 #lovelewden #electricianschoice #manufacturing #electricians

I’m quietly celebrating 40 years of working in Engineering this week. 40 years ago, I set off on my moped for the 1-mile journey to start a government funded “Youth Training Scheme” based in the remnants of the GEC group manufacturing site in Trafford Park. I had a start date for an Apprenticeship in September - BUT would only be allowed to start if I passed my O levels in certain subjects – so this was my fallback position while I waited. Engineering is great, it’s interesting, it’s exciting, it opens up opportunities, it’s a lifelong journey - and learning experience. I’ve met so many interesting and skilled people there are too many to list -and been lucky enough to work in so many different disciplines - I could never have imagined the journey of opportunities that would unfold: I learned how to use hand tools, to drill and tap, to operate milling machines and lathes. I learned how to draw and design, to draw on CAD, I worked at the birthplace of Zeron 100, I became an expert at Aluminium Diecasting and worked with robots ! I saw automation, new products being designed and developed and put into production. I learned about process engineering and continuous improvement, I even learned how to smelt molten aluminium. The foundry industry also gave me experience in Zinc Diecasting, gravity casting, manufacture of cores and moulds, reverse engineering, metallurgy, heat treatment, x rays, dye penetrant testing, ultrasonic testing, destructive testing. It got even more interesting with the lost wax process of investment casting. I’ve also learned about vacuum pumps, CNC machining, rubber moulding, water jet cutting, fabrication, amazing sheet metal forming and welding, electropolishing, surface treatments such as pickling and passivation, metal spraying, diamond coating, dynamic balancing, static balancing, and sophisticated inspection measuring equipment with unfathomable accuracy. I’ve worked with complex manufacturing machinery with patented designs designed and made in the UK and shipped worldwide. Yes, Engineering is great. You can even travel, Engineering is global, it’s a universal language, it allowed me to travel to France, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey – and even China. My journey so far is not unique to me - and has only scratched the surface of what is available in Engineering - but how do you fit that in an advert for apprenticeships ? Engineering is a lifelong apprenticeship, I’m only 40 years in to mine so far, and continue to feel excited about what’s still to come. By the way – did you know that Engineering is Great !

Low or varying pressure of mains water is a common issue that homes can experience. To stabilise this, a booster pump like SCALA2 can be installed. Always check local legislation before installing a booster pump directly onto the water main. When selecting a booster pump to boost city mains then look: ✅Low Noise These pumps are often installed inside the home, so look for low noise that does not disturb the residents. Even if installed outside, a low noise solution will not disturb the neighbors. ✅Robust Water pressure in mains can be high at times, and the solution must be able to handle the combined inlet and pump pressure. ✅Stabilise the pressure. Select a booster pump that is both able to increase pressure, but also to stabilise pressure so that the end user will experience constant water pressure throughout the day, regardless of fluctuations in the water mains. ✅Approved for drinking water. Pumps used to boost mains water must be approved for drinking water. SCALA2 is a booster for versatile installations ➡️ Your go-to water pressure booster to solve the task. A while back, I put out a post asking for people’s thoughts and questions surrounding check valves. Today, I am starting a mini-video series addressing some of these concerns, beginning with a brief overview of check valves! #manufacturing #industry #engineering #checkvalve #crackingpressure #flowrate

Having the axial slitting option makes the removal of the Insulation just so much easier, make sure you select this option if and when you purchase this system. A great tool in your plant for anything round and out of round, due to it single blade system and 4 jaw system, it is unlike any other stripping machine. The Schleuniger JacketStrip 8310 axially and radially slits the insulation of out-of-round and multiconductor cables from 2.5 - 25 mm (0.1" - 1'') O.D. and up to 500 mm (19.7") in stripping length without any damage to the inner conductors or shielding. Processing of out-of-round and twisted pair cables No blade changes required Intuitive programming via color touchscreen Digital display of axial and radial blade depths Universal 4-jaw cable centering system with wayback function Barcode scanning function

The UK's apprenticeship system has a longstanding history of excellence, dating back to medieval times. This system evolved significantly during the Industrial Revolution, playing a crucial role in nurturing a highly skilled workforce. Throughout the 20th century, the UK's apprenticeships adapted to new industries and technologies, setting a global standard for vocational education and training. Unfortunately, the UK has seen a decline in its leadership in this area. Here are 5 compelling reasons why investing in today's youth is essential for a better future: 1. Drive Innovation: Young engineers are at the forefront of technological advancements. 2. Boost Economy: Engineering talent drives economic growth and job creation. 3. Ensure Sustainability: Educated youth play a key role in promoting green and sustainable solutions. 4. Stay Competitive: Developing talent is crucial to maintaining a leading global position. 5. Embrace Diversity: A diverse engineering workforce leads to innovative and inclusive solutions.

Maintenance and Photographing White Metal Bearings One of the many things that we obsess about in the repair facility at Coleherne Ltd, is the ‘suitability report’ – also known as the ‘suity’. On receipt, we inspect the damaged bearing to ensure that it is suitable for repair – it sounds obvious, but it is a critical step in the repair process. As part of the production of the ‘suity’, we take photographs of the damaged white metal bearings – back, front, top, bottom, inside, outside - you get the idea. Sadly, one of the least photogenic things in the world is the white metal bearing lining. The reflections, the glare – urgh. We have had a ‘photobooth’ in the stores for a while, but that was in the wrong place, the inspection room was too bright (glare) and taking filthy bearings into a clean area was never popular with the inspection team. So, when we moved the repair team into their new workshop area, we built a photobooth, and pretty good it is too. This dedicated area also allows us to take photographs in the ‘before’ and ‘after’ state using the same, plain backdrop. Next steps include upgrading the camera and establishing a direct download capability to get the image files saved straight into the job file on the network. This new photo booth means that I can also photograph bearing failures for use in the white metal bearing training that I deliver face-to-face across the UK, the gulf states and north America. https://lnkd.in/gCRe-Yd3 Finally, has anyone got any tips to share with our repair team on photographing white metal bearings? #britishengineering, #maintenance, #rotatingequipment, #engineering

Metalworking fluid management is often still at Industry 4.oh dear. If this is how you top-up your machine tools, you are missing out on some significant savings and improvements on the shop floor. Getting coolant right is important, and impacts so many aspects of the business - health and safety, environmental, tooling spend, coolant spend, cycle times, parts quality, machine downtime, production efficiency. Getting coolant wrong is unfortunately easy, but it's never cheap when you look at true cost instead of price. Coolant management is the last unturned stone in the search for efficiencies and savings in manufacturing.

Whilst it's a positive sign to see the uplift, as always - still more needs to be done. Here Caroline Litchfield, partner and head of manufacturing and supply chain at independent law firm Brabners hits the nail on the head: “While we are by no means out of the woods yet, manufacturers will be cautiously optimistic for the future given growth in the wider economy.... UK makers will want to see any incoming government setting out how it will help address the skills gap within the industry and support a shift to the modern, sustainable methods of manufacturing which will be the pillars of future growth.” 💯 we need to address the skills gap and ensure that we are greening the supply chain 💯 #netzero #sustainability #greeningthesupplychain

🤝 Collaboration can be the catalyst for success 🤝 One of the biggest perks of my job is meeting incredible people doing incredible things for the UK manufacturing sector. From tier one suppliers into the nuclear defence sector to baking equipment manufacturers to pool table cloth manufacturers; I get the opportunity to meet new people pretty much every day operating in their own unique space within the manufacturing sector. However this morning wasn't about meeting someone new but rather catching up with a well known and well respected MIY member... It was was a great pleasure as always to meet up with the top man that is Adam Bradley today for a coffee. Adam is the MD at Corrosion Resistant Materials Ltd and as of a couple of month's time, they'll be entering their third year as an MIY member. As a passionate advocate for what we do at MIY, we had a good chat about all things network growth and the one word that must have popped up 40+ times in various contexts was 'collaboration'. Business leaders like Adam that truly appreciate the value of collaboration and meeting new people, are absolutely fundamental to the continued growth and success of the manufacturing sector. We spoke at length about collaboration today, in all its forms and you only need to take one look at Adam's profile on here to see just how much his desire to collaborate and support others has positively impacted both his life and CRM's success. Yet, regardless of the particular sector(s) any given manufacturer is working in, many experience similar challenges - people/culture, too busy, not busy enough, energy costs, need for automation etc. With this in mind and reflecting on my chat with Adam today, these companies have two choices: 1. Sit back and carry on doing the same things in the hope that something changes (the easy option). 2. Do something different / try something new and start conversations with people you have never met before (the hard option). Option 1 = no new collaborations. Option 2 = potential for new exciting collaborations. Made in Yorkshire and Made in the Midlands work with companies that choose option 2. That being said, regardless of who you are or whichever option you chose, if you agree that the manufacturing sector does have its challenges and that there is room for improvement at the highest level, it terms of supply chain competency in government, then you can do something straight away that's risk-free and will have a positive impact 👇 Please join our #BackingBritain campaign: 🇬🇧 https://lnkd.in/eyAYV4ka 🇬🇧 Together, we are stronger.
