Can you claim R&D if you receive grant funding? You guessed it, it’s not as easy as yes or no. There are different rules depending on the type of grant you have received and if the project was state funded. Here are some things to consider before making a submission. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗶𝗱: The SME scheme is a notifiable State Aid. If your project receives any other notifiable State Aids, you can't claim SME relief for the same project. 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀: Before claiming for a project that received a grant, ensure it wasn't a notifiable State Aid. The grant provider can confirm this crucial detail. 𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗖 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁-𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀: If your project received a notifiable State Aid grant, it's eligible under the RDEC scheme, not the SME scheme. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Eligible expenditure under the RDEC scheme isn't reduced by the value of the grant received. 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵: Companies with multiple projects can make RDEC claims for grant-funded projects and SME claims for non-grant funded projects, giving a accurate representation of the work taken on by the company. These point’s are also without taking into consideration the new merged scheme. So the quick answer would be yes, you can claim R&D if you receive grant funding but there are things you need to clarify and consider in order to remain compliant when making a submission. Last week, I had an interesting conversation with an expert who has been engaged for helping in an Accelerator programme. The bottomline of the conversation was, you tell us what you are looking for and select from out of the fifteen Startups in the Cohort and I will prepare them to meet up to the criteria given and make them investible for you. While the idea is great, investments don't happen that way. Yes, investors do look for unique and not easy to copy solutions that are scalable and profitable, with founders having great execution capability, but these are universal expectations. A lot of what goes into taking a decision is intuitive and hard to articulate factors come into play. So, it's very difficult to pick a startup and say, give them the required grooming and we will invest. Never happens that way. Investors want to see the real entrepreneur, not the one decked-up with all the make-up. Anyway, I wish the Accelerator and the Technical Mentor well on their mission. #mentoring #investing

As a business owner always find ways to maximise your profit. If you can delve into other things which will not obstruct your already made business structure give it a try. In this picture it shows a customer holding my 4L bottle of Elixir. I am able to sell this because when it comes to the production of Elixir there is always excess and with that excess instead of wasting it you can turn it into a quick profit like I have by making a variant of my product.
