The United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) is a subsidiary, intergovernmental body of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) which serves as a focal point within the United Nations Economic and Social Council for trade facilitation recommendations and electronic business standards. It has global membership and its members are experts from intergovernmental organizations, individual countries' authorities and also from the business community.

In focus

The UNECE Secretariat is pleased to announce that Ms. Nancy Norris has been elected by acclamation as the new Chair of UN/CEFACT for the period 2024 - 2026. Ms. Norris, from Canada, served as the UN/CEFACT Vice Chair and is the Senior Director of ESG and Digital Trust at the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. At the same time, the Secretariat expressed appreciation for the dedication, guidance, and work of the outgoing Chair of UN/CEFACT from the United Kingdom, Ms. Sue Probert.

2024 UN/LOCODE Advisory Group session has appointed a new Chair and Vice Chair for the term 2024-2025:

  • Chairperson & Convener of the Maintenance Team: Ms. Maria Teresa Chavarri (USA)
  • Vice Chairperson & Convener of the Strategy Team: Mr. Tiago Spengler (Brazil)

The UN/CEFACT standards publication process is currently in progress, with several updates at various stages: 

  • The UN/EDIFACT D24A is pending validation, undergoing careful review to ensure accuracy.
  • Simultaneously, the UN/CCL D23B has been completed and awaits uploading to the ECE website for public access.
  • Additionally, we are pleased to announce that the UN/LOCODE 2023-2 publication is now complete, providing valuable location code information. We are dedicated to delivering reliable and up-to-date standards, and we appreciate your patience as we finalize these crucial publications for the benefit of the global trade community.

Highlights

9 July 2024: We are pleased to announce a joint Call to Action together with the International Chamber of Commerce's Digital Standards Initiative (DSI) aimed at accelerating the adoption of globally interoperable standards essential for achieving digital trade worldwide. The Call to Action follows the development of the ICC Key Trade Documents and Data Elements (KTDDE) framework and of UNECE’s UN/CEFACT Buy-Ship-Pay Reference Data Model and Trade Finance initiative. Together, they support the digitalization of end-to-end supply chains through standardized semantics, and can help create a more efficient, cost-effective, and interoperable global trade ecosystem.

10 June 2024: This is to announce a 30-day public review until 10 July 2024 concerning the White Paper on Cross-border Multimodal Digital Corridors for Regulatory-related Movements of Consignment Data and Consignment Status Information for Trade Facilitation. 3 June 2024: We are pleased to announce that the cutoff date for Data Maintenance Requests (DMRs) for the new D24A cycle has been extended. Previously set for 30 May 2024, the cutoff date for DMR submissions has now been extended for an additional week. This extension provides our valued stakeholders with additional time to ensure the accuracy and completeness of their data submissions. The new deadline for DMR submissions is 6 June 2024.
