Story
When Penny Dahl calls the Finders Keepers detective agency hoping for help locating her missing daughter, Holly is reluctant to accept the case. Her partner has Covid. Her mother has just died. And Holly is meant to be on leave. But something in Penny Dahl’s desperate voice makes it impossible for Holly to turn her down. Mere blocks from where Bonnie Dahl disappeared live Professors Rodney and Emily Harris. They are the picture of bourgeois respectability: married octogenarians, devoted to each other, and semi-retired lifelong academics. But they are harboring an unholy secret in the basement.

Not Holly’ voice
Reviewed: 09-09-23
I took stars off because of the narrator. This is not the voice and mannerisms of the Holly we know and love. I ended up switching to the kindle book so I could keep her in my head. I’m my opinion the choice of narrator here was a huge mistake.

So full of emotions with this one

I’m not even sure how to review a book about a book like this. A story that had such a profound and emotional effect on me. It has certainly led to a book hangover and a quest to read additional works by Conroy. Rarely do you come across a writer who can write such amazing prose that it feels almost musical. Yet now that I’m done I simply want to stare out the window and ponder and think...for quite some time.

Story
Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases - a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with as well as way less experience in the dating department than the average 30-year-old. It doesn't help that she has Asperger's and that French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. She decides that she needs lots of practice - with a professional - which is why she hires escort Michael Phan.

Story
Maurice Swift is handsome, charming, and hungry for fame. The one thing he doesn’t have is talent - but he’s not about to let a detail like that stand in his way. After all, a would-be writer can find stories anywhere. They don’t need to be his own. Working as a waiter in a West Berlin hotel in 1988, Maurice engineers the perfect opportunity: a chance encounter with celebrated novelist Erich Ackermann. He quickly ingratiates himself with the powerful - but desperately lonely - older man, teasing out of Erich a terrible, long-held secret about his activities during the war.

Not my favorite Boyne
Reviewed: 01-05-19
I’m going to be contrary. I loved The Hearts Invisible Furies. In fact so much it’s one of my top 5 favs of all times. In Boyne’s latest, he gives us an utterly despicable human being in Maurice. My three star rating has nothing to do with the writing, which is superb. It comes from me just not being as engaged in the storyline. It felt a little too long with additional characters that will be soon forgettable. I recommend Hearts to everyone who asks me for recommendations.

Just brilliant!

Holy crap this is my new fav author. I have a massive book hangover from this one. This (his) third book just came out in August. What am I going to do now? 😭😭. I’ve read thousands of books and let me tell you, David Joy needs to be on your radar. I recommend so much the audiobook version of this too (I bought ebook & audio 🤗). It was like listening to a movie! Macleod Andrews is a brilliant narrator. Lately I can’t seem to get enough of Southern Noir/Grit Lit. So this genre isn’t for the faint of heart. But let me tell you of this genre, Joy has a way of making you Care for a character- rather than just detest them all. I can’t wait to see the future ahead for this author.

Erin Gibson has a singular goal - to create a utopian future where women are recognized as humans. In Feminasty - titled after her nickname on the hit podcast Throwing Shade - she has written a collection of make-you-laugh-until-you-cry essays that expose the hidden rules that make life as a woman unnecessarily hard and deconstructs them in a way that's bold, provocative, and hilarious.

Warning: mind altering food descriptions will cause you to gain 10 fictitious pounds! The foodie in me really enjoyed this fall escape to Vermont while it’s summertime right now.
Olivia (Livvy) is a pastry chef for an upscale club in Boston until she causes a fire and hightails it out of town seeking comfort from her friend Hannah rural Vermont. While there she starts working for an Inn and gets an immediate immersion into small town life and some interesting characters.
From the endless food and the physical setting, the atmosphere really comes alive. You’ll feel transported to Vermont and caught up in these people.
Excuse me, I need to go eat some pie.

Isabelle confesses that, as a teen in 1930s Kentucky, she fell in love with Robert Prewitt, a would-be doctor and the black son of her family’s housekeeper - in a town where blacks weren’t allowed after dark. The tale of their forbidden relationship and its tragic consequences just might help Dorrie find her own way.

Isabelle’s story broke my heart. I listened to this on audiobook while commuting and it made me cry 😢. I’ll never understand human cruelty. Beautifully written, the author lets the story unfold perfectly. I wasn’t completely crazy about the narration but the story was so good it didn’t really matter.

Story
It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

Excellent start to new series!
Reviewed: 01-14-18
I picked this up because I love post-apocalyptic fiction. I wasn’t sure if Roberts would be able to pull this off given her usual romance genre. How she proved me wrong! First of a promising new series, Roberts has laid the ground work for a ‘magickal’ ride. I hope we haven’t seen the last of some of the characters in this one, but I’m looking forward to all the additional ones we will meet in the next installment. Too bad we have to wait until December ‘18 for book two!
