Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.

Story
The summer in question started out with hot, fun-filled days and new friendships. We had just turned thirteen and had our whole lives ahead of us. But that was before her. Before we became known as the Hixton Five and our lives become defined by one night. It’s hard to believe twenty years have passed since she was locked away. But now she’s free and strange things have started to happen. When I close my eyes, the creeping anxiety and fear is overwhelming and all too real. Because the monster is back, and I know she has a score to settle with us.

Such a let down. I’ve been looking forward to this release but it fell very very short. No twists, no suspense, unrealistic and left me with questions. It was more of a feminist man hating story than thriller. I hope Ware hasn’t lost her touch.

Missed Mark
Reviewed: 05-10-24
I had high hopes starting this but had to bail about a quarter of the way in. There is too much time revisiting the sins of our past involving slavery and Jim Crow and not enough time on criminal investigation and courtroom dialogue. The monologues about the personal sufferings and injustices experienced by one of the characters quickly became redundant and boring. If you’re looking for a legal thriller you be disappointed with this one.

Story
When Anna Hartley’s husband, Henry, calls her with a terrible, guilty confession, she can’t believe what she hears. It has to be a bad joke—the mild, predictable artist she married would never hurt a fly, let alone commit murder. But her confusion turns to horror when police find his body washed up on the banks of the Rio Grande.

Outrageous and idiotic

First off, I had the twist figured out in the first few chapters but I was still drawn into the drama of the story. Then I realized every character is selfish and moronic and couldn’t find one to root for. Then the chapters got very repetitive, stalling for time. By the time I was pot committed to finishing it I had a headache from eye rolling at the bogusness of this story.

Story
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs. Shrouded in the shadows, she sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall.
