AWFUL!
Reviewed: 04-13-24
This story was just plain awful! I had such high hopes based on glowing reviews. I'd also read another of the author's books, The Third Son (which I absolutely loved). This story is just plain bad. Very disjointed, couldn't keep up with the characters, very unlikable characters, EXTREMELY gory (and I'm not normally one to shy away from gore), so tedious. The story was disgusting and finally, when having 'only' four hours left, I gave up. So happy with my decision to listen to no more of this garbage, as I could care less who killed who. My advice is to read The Third Son, but don't waste your time on this one.

Story
True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace.

TOO MUCH FLUFF AND FILLER
Reviewed: 03-29-24
Listened to only the first couple of chapters. Couldn't get past the excessive (what I call) fluff and fillers. Describing every little movement (taking coffee to the other room, angling into the last parking spot, would have preferred going to the larger and better stocked grocery store..... I mean, who cares??) Words and descriptions that add nothing to the story, but just take up space. Very annoying! Returning the book, hopefully, for a credit. Also, I found the narrator overly dramatic.

I listened to a couple hours of this book and finally gave up. It was so boring. I've LOVED the couple of her other books (The Maid's Diary and The Patient's Secret), but this one - No. One of the narrators was awful. I returned the book.

Not Quite What I Expected

First I'd like to say that this author is a very good writer! The composition and the lack of what I call 'fluff' or 'filler' is excellent. The portrayal of a person with dementia is right on point. The narrator is very good. What turned me off was the communal living situation and goings-on there. The storyline does seem to go in several unnecessary directions. The ending is a bit too quick.... would like to have read more about the decisions that were made.

I'm only a couple of chapters in, but narration is awful! It may very well be a decent book, but I just can't get into the story when all I hear is the poor narration. She over-pronounciates. every. word. and sounds like a child reading the book...... I just can't listen to it. Sorry - needing to return it.

Love Lucinda Berry and the books of hers that I've already read. However, this storyline is just disgusting. I can't say more without giving things away, but believe me, not one of her best (probably the worst). Very unlikeable characters. Not a 'psychological thriller', not 'heart-stopping'..... not worth your time.

To begin with, I really didn't like the narrator - too much of a sickeningly sweet, baby sounding voice. I listened to this one after having listened to the Housemaid and The Housemaid's Secret. Both of those were outstanding with outstanding narration. Maybe I had too high of hopes on Never Lie. I really can't/shouldn't say the main reasons I didn't like it (I'd be giving away the storyline). But..... too many crazies - just ridiculous. I'm hoping to find another McFadden book that's as good as the both of the Housemaids.
