No one will be mad if you just serve burgers, hot dogs, and a wide variety of summer cocktails and mocktails, especially if you're trying to throw a good 4th of July party. But what if you're trying to throw a GREAT one? To really take your celebration over the top (and go down in history as hosting the best patriotic BBQ or picnic), you’ve got to offer fun and flavorful side dishes too. Check out our list of 52 Fourth of July side dishes—we’ve got everything from must-have classics to new faves we bet you’ll come back to again and again this summer.

When it comes to summer side dishes, there are a few tried-and-true categories to pull from: veggie-forward salads, pasta salads, and potato salads. If you’re going wilder with your mains (serving a brick chicken or grilled lobster tail maybe?), keep things simple with the classics, like macaroni salad, Southern potato salad, grilled zucchini, or coleslaw. They’re classics for a reason, and will please everyone in your crowd.

If you’re just doing standard BBQ fare, though, the side dishes are your chance to introduce exciting flavors to you and your guests’ plates. Take inspiration from the classics, but add different ingredients and cooking techniques to really wow your guests. Upgrade plain ol’ macaroni salad into lobster roll pasta salad or Thai peanut chicken pasta salad; average potato salad into red potato salad or jalapeno popper potato salad; regular coleslaw into bright and fresh red cabbage slaw… the options are endless. Trust us, serve these and you’ll have guests clamoring for the recipes.

Instead of leaving the zucchini in their traditional slices, we threaded them onto skewers to lessen the amount of direct contact the zucchini had with the grill and create contrasting textures. The ribboning also creates plenty of nooks and crannies for the creamy ricotta and walnuts to settle.
