Christina Lauren, returns with a delicious new romance between the buttoned-up heir of a grocery chain and his free-spirited artist ex as they fake their relationship in order to receive a massive inheritance.

Anna Green thought she was marrying Liam “West” Weston for access to subsidized family housing while at UCLA. She also thought she’d signed divorce papers when the graduation caps were tossed, and they both went on their merry ways.

Three years later, Anna is a starving artist living paycheck to paycheck while West is a Stanford professor. He may be one of four heirs to the Weston Foods conglomerate, but he has little interest in working for the heartless corporation his family built from the ground up. He is interested, however, in his one-hundred-million-dollar inheritance. There’s just one catch.

Due to an antiquated clause in his grandfather’s will, Liam won’t see a penny until he’s been happily married for five years. Just when Liam thinks he’s in the home stretch, pressure mounts from his family to see this mysterious spouse, and he has no choice but to turn to the one person he’s afraid to introduce to his one-percenter parents—his unpolished, not-so-ex-wife.

But in the presence of his family, Liam’s fears quickly shift from whether the feisty, foul-mouthed, paint-splattered Anna can play the part to whether the toxic world of wealth will corrupt someone as pure of heart as his surprisingly grounded and loyal wife. Liam will have to ask himself if the price tag on his flimsy cover story is worth losing true love that sprouted from a lie.

4.5 rounded down - SO good!! Usually not a romance girl, but this one was it!! The witty banter was perfection and had me laughing out loud so many times throughout. And chapter 25 🥵!!! Wish there was more emotional development for the MMC which is why it's not a perfect 5 star, but still loved it!!

writing: fine | plot: weirdly escapist? idk | ending: alright | 3.5 rounded up

my opinion

I think this is as "eat the rich" as a billionaire romance can be. Yes, Liam lowballs tf outta her at the start, but then he's really in his MacKenzie Scott bag. Anyways, I'm a sucker for fake marriage to cash out an inheritance (yes, this specific scenario), so this quickly became one of my most anticipated reads of the year. Thankfully, it was one of the better reads from that list.

(Not so) fun fact: this is the first Christina Lauren book I've read with my eyeballs. I've commented that their other books are always funny in the first half and stressy 'n depressy in the second, and this was a similar vibe. I would say it was the least annoying of the handful I've read—the MMC didn't gaslight the FMC for not being chill about his cheating past (lol) and there were no simultaneous sex dreams (projectile vomit). Was Anna leaning heavily toward "pick me" territory? Tower of Pisa levels of lean, yes. But I did like their bants and how she loosened the stick that was so firmly wedged in Liam's poop chute.

I hate to say it, but this was weirdly an escapist read (until all the conflict). Yes, billionaires are doing awful things, forcing us to use paper straws being one of their more vicious crimes, but I would never say no to an over-water bungalow. I'm sorry. Also, I've been described as financially illiterate , but Anna may have me beat. Not sure how 100k was going to pay off her student loans, her father's medical bills, and pay for daily rehab in the US.

All in all, this was a fun, straightforward read. One of the better fake marriage romances I've read and definitely the best billionaire romance. Finally found one where the MMC wasn't a straight-up misogynistic sociopath (ahem Terms & Conditions by Lauren Asher).

pros & cons

pros: funny, good dynamic between Anna and Liam, loved the setting, did as good of a job one could do in making a billionaire romance palatable in this current climate

cons: the ending was TOO neatly wrapped up, sometimes Anna gave strong pick-me vibes, that tie-dye dress Liam was salivating over was a crime... very 2007 prom of her, some math quite literally did not add up

Anna Green. Pink haired quirky struggling artist.

Liam West. Prim & proper heir to a grocery store chain fortune.

Anna and Liam get married to gain access to cheaper housing while in college. Soon after, they get divorced and go separate ways. Three years later, out of the blue, West shows back up. Not only did the divorce never get finalized but now he needs a favor: a date to his sister's wedding. As his wife. The wife he must have in order to claim his stake on the family fortune. Can a broke gal look past this one tiny detail in order to gain access to some of that trust fund money? Especially when her dad is sick and they could really use it for medical bills. And can she actually convince his entire family that someone who more resembles a stranger to her is actually the love of her life? These two could not be more opposite in pretty much every aspect. But as we all know...sometimes opposites attract.

*Fake dating
*Marriage of convenience
*Complex family dynamics
*Opposites attract
*Second chance at love
*Slow burn
*Beachy read set in a tropical location
*Dual POV
*Funny!!!

Writing duo Christina Lauren have a very specific formula. One I am very much a fan of. Paradise Problem brings the laughs, pop culture references, and witty banter that I have come to know and love from these ladies. Even so, this one felt a little different from their usual- in a good way. There is no instalove and it is very much a slow burn. But when the spice finally arrives it is HOT. Somewhat predictable, but hey, most Happily Ever Afters are, right? This wasn't like a deep connect with the characters type of book for me, but it's definitely the perfect beachy read. Lots of laughs, a sprinkle of spice, and a touch of heart. 3.5 stars rounded up.

DNF at 40%. I’m just not buying the romance. It feels too lust-based and I don’t really care about the rich people family drama 🙄.

I also think I’m just sick and tired of the fake dating trope at this point. It feels too forced.

I eagerly awaited this book, knowing it would be worth the wait. I adore this dynamic duo, and their chemistry and quick-witted, passionate love stories never cease to amaze me.

I was truly devastated and even cried aloud after my ARC request was rejected. This book is absolutely phenomenal! Every year, I vote for Emily Henry’s books as the best in romance, but this year, my favorite duo has outdone themselves. They’ve crafted a brilliant fake-real marriage of convenience and opposites-attract story, set against the stunning backdrop of an Indonesian island wedding. Imagine a family dynamic that’s a mix of the Lannisters from "Game of Thrones" and the Roys from "Succession" (minus the “Disgusting Brothers” team).

The story is narrated by Anna Green, a 25-year-old, pink-haired, eccentric artist who resembles a human Muppet character. She’s a starving artist working odd jobs to pay her rent and her recovering cancer patient father’s hospital bills. Her counterpart, Liam “West” Weston, is the middle son and one of the heirs to the Weston Foods conglomerate. A quirky professor, he was raised by a narcissistic father and a brutally honest mother, making him one of four siblings in a dysfunctional family.

During his doctoral studies, Liam refused to join the family business, opting instead for his own path. He was only approved for graduate housing if he had a family. Enter his brother Jack, who introduced him to Anna. She couldn't afford to rent an apartment, so they agreed to a temporary marriage to share the apartment. After two years, when Anna graduated and Liam completed his doctorate, they planned to part ways.

Three years later, Anna is at her lowest, fired from her gas station night shift job, living with adventurous roommates, spending her days watching "Conan the Barbarian," and experimenting with edibles. Suddenly, she’s greeted by a handsome stranger—her ex-husband, Liam. Except they never actually divorced. Liam is no longer a penniless student but an heir to the sixth-largest grocery empire, about to inherit a hundred million dollars. The catch? He must stay married for five years and introduce his wife to his family at his sister Charlotte’s wedding on a private Indonesian island.

Anna initially resists the plan until Liam reveals a loophole in the will that could endanger his entire family. He offers her compensation that could pay off her student debt, cover her father’s medical bills, and fund her art career. She even has a "Pretty Woman" moment, receiving a credit card for a makeover and luxurious dresses for the ten-day wedding event.

As they pretend to be a romantic couple, the sparks fly, and their chemistry becomes undeniable. The only problem is whether the good-hearted but straightforward, feisty, and artistic Anna can fit into the toxic world of pretentious rich people.

Can Liam protect the woman he’s developing feelings for? Will he choose his family’s benefits over his love, risking his chance at forever happiness?

This book is a masterful blend of high-tension family drama, a perfect paradise setting, intense chemistry, steamy scenes, and hilarious yet heartwarming moments. The characterization is brilliant! Ray Weston is a triple-threat villain reminiscent of Logan Roy, Tywin Lannister, and Blake Carrington. His wife, Janet, is a cold-blooded, snarky insult machine. Eldest brother Alex is a people-pleaser living in his father’s shadow, fueled by resentment and envy towards Liam. Younger brother Jack is the underachiever, and Charlotte is the baby of the family. They all need therapy to address their issues, reminding us that money doesn’t cure unhappiness or family traumas.

I loved the perfect chemistry between Anna and Liam and the natural progression of their relationship. They’re truly meant to be! They’ve become one of my favorite book couples, and this book is not only my favorite Christina Lauren novel but also my favorite romance book of 2024, earning a well-deserved five stars!

reading THE PARADISE PROBLEM in paradise hits different 🌴🙌🏼🥰 pro tip: save this one for a tropical vaca or beach day for maximum vibes! it was suchhhhh a fun binge, can’t wait for readers to get their hands on this come 5/14!!

read if you like: THE UNHONEYMOONERS, CRAZY RICH ASIANS, fake dating tropes, tropical vacations, the rich & famous, toxic families, great settings to escape into

this book gave me major THE UNHONEYMOONERS vibes 🌴 i’ve had it on my shelf for 5 months and saved it to read it poolside in Hawaii… and i’m SO glad i did 👏🏼 this setting was such a vibe and i truly felt like i was a part of the book reading it there. i feel like sometimes liking or disliking a book has to do with your personal mindset and location and this was probably that for me—it matched so well and i never wanted to put it down.

i’ve seen some meh reviews for this but i really enjoyed it. even though they were problematic, i love reading about rich families and how they live. typically fake dating tropes are my #1 romance trope enemy (it seems to be the top trope this year…as seen in FUNNY STORY & JUST FOR THE SUMMER), but it was executed so well here! there was some good steam and i think Liam will be everyone’s new book bf 🫶🏼

THE PARADISE PROBLEM follows Anna and West. she’s broke and unemployed and he’s a professor and heir to a major grocery chain. they got fake married years back and thought the divorce was final—but it wasn’t. now there’s a huge inheritance on the line if they can’t stick it out for a few more months and prove to his family they’re madly in love while on a family vaca on a private island. simple, right? 👀

like i said above, saving this for a binge on the beach or vaca for the vibes. the chemistry between the two MCs was top notch 🔥🥵 the toxic family dynamic will be hit or miss for some people but it gave some good tension and gave CRAZY RICH ASIAN vibes for me. plus, it proved even more how Liam is just the besttttt 🥹 and the ending was adorable.

TLDR—pre-order it, go in blind, enjoy the ride and have fun with it. i sure did 🥰🌴

thank you to Gallery Books for the #gifted early copy!

Ever found yourself wrapped up in a book where the characters feel like friends you'd love to hang out with? Well, that's exactly what you'll get with Liam and Anna in this delightful read. From the get-go, these two are simply irresistible. Anna's sass and humor had me chuckling, while Liam’s journey from a guarded loner to someone who embraces his feelings was nothing short of heartwarming.

Anna is the kind of character who lights up every page she’s on. Her wit and spark not only entertain but also bring out the best in those around her—especially Liam. Watching her influence on him was like seeing sunshine melt away the frost. Initially, Liam might not win you over immediately, but trust me, give him time. As he starts to let his guard down and allow his emotions to surface, you’ll see a transformation that’s both touching and satisfying.

One of the standout features of this book is the dual perspective. It’s a brilliant move by the author, allowing us to dive deep into both characters’ minds. Through Liam’s eyes, we see the profound impact of his relationship with his father, adding a layer of depth to his character and enriching the story. His struggle and eventual triumph over his past are truly uplifting.

And let’s talk about the balance in this book—oh, it’s spot on! There’s the perfect mix of spicy moments, laugh-out-loud humor, and heartfelt scenes that tug at your heartstrings. The author has woven these elements together seamlessly, creating a narrative that keeps you hooked from start to finish.

Sure, the plot might not win awards for originality, but who needs that when the execution is this good? The layers within the story—character growth, emotional depth, and the evolving dynamics between Liam and Anna—make it a memorable journey. If there’s a minor quibble, it’s with how the conflict is resolved. It felt a bit rushed, but it doesn’t overshadow the overall enjoyment and satisfaction the ending brings.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a book with charming characters, a well-balanced story, and an emotional rollercoaster that leaves you smiling, this is the one. Liam and Anna’s story is a delightful escape that’s well worth your time.

The perfect light-hearted summer read! I love books like this. It had a very nice mixture of comedy and romance all wrapped up in a perfect summer setting. I completely forgot how captivating Christina Lauren's writing style feels. The ending wasn't my favorite but I did appreciate how much of their story we got to see after they got together. If you need a book to read on vacation or to make you feel like you are on vacation... this is the one!

4🌟!!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book; it was a cute and fun read! Anna's character, with her humor and caring nature, resonated with me deeply. I felt a strong connection to her and could envision us being best friends in real life😭💗.Her relationship with Liam was adorable, and their banter had me chuckling throughout the book😂💕.The family drama added an extra layer of depth to the story, and I was instantly invested in the outcome and it had me gasping, laughing and outraged at the same time. While I would have rated this book higher than 4 stars, I found myself getting a little bored at times with the detailed descriptions of things I had no prior knowledge of.

I’m probably in the minority here but I didn’t enjoy this one and I’m sorry 🙃

No amount of money in the world would’ve made me tolerate this rich toxic’s family BS (and I grew up in EXTREME poverty. So that says enough). I thought this was going to be a light read but I ended up being really sad through the whole book? So much toxicity…
Oh and enlighten me here LOL - but they’re grocery store owners and they’re treated like celebrities?? And the owner acts like he’s the chief of the mafia seriously GTFOH😂

I didn’t really connect to the characters unfortunately, I felt like they were having a repeat of the same conversations over and over

What you can expect from this book :
🏝️ Fake dating
🏝️ Marriage of convenience
🏝️ Toxic rich family drama
🏝️ Narcissistic father
🏝️ Island setting
🏝️ Lots of lust

Fake Dating ✔️
Marriage of Convenience ✔️
Forced Proximity ✔️
One bed ✔️

Need I say more? All of my favorite tropes rolled into one adorable book. This is the 13th Christina Lauren book I’ve read and I have to say it’s my new favorite! Lucky number 13! 🍀😉 I loved Liam and Anna - both individually and as a couple. Their personalities were lovable and realistic and gelled really well together. The banter, the timing, the intimate scenes, all of it was so well crafted by the authors. I have a feeling their readers will love this just as much as I have! I am excited to watch this one climb the ranks on their Goodreads page in the months to come. Right now it is at slot 25 but I have no doubt that it will soon rise to the top. 💖🤗 If you’re in the mood for a cute standalone romance, definitely give this one a go!

SHUT UP the last chapter and epilogue sold me 🥹 im so hesitant going into christina lauren books because they’re so hit or miss with me but i ate this one up ngl

the romance was romancingggg and it was just enough of a “slow burn” with a hint of chemistry here and there that found such a fine middle ground. also the plot was genuinely plotty, they’d be talking about stuff that would completely fly over my head because i fear im an idiot! but that’s okay!

anna is a mess. i love her. her dynamic with west(?) was so stinkin cute and really brought out his inner 12 year old boy (seeing as that’s what she embodies 🫶🏼) suchhhhh a fun cutesy summer romance i should be reading on vacation and not holed up in my room like a man playing video games in his basement 😍

4.5 stars

Oh man this was SO CLOSE to being a 5-star read for me.

I liked the beginning, wasn't your typical marriage of convenience start where they had already done it and were parting ways. Pretty crazy that they were together for as long as they were and nothing really developed.

But I loved their relationship from the start. Anna is crazy but in such a good way and is so funny. Her personality really jived nicely with Liam's because although he is more private and less animated, he still has a great personality and really seemed to adore how quirky Anna was and never made her feel any less than appreciated.

But his family man. His family is certifiable. They ended up being a bit of a negative for me because it was just SO CRAZY it was unreal. I think it could have been dialed down a notch and still been enjoyable and would have moved the story alone. But I was anxious throughout the whole book because they spent 90% of it with the family and there was always some bullshit happening.

And we were SO CLOSE to getting through this without a third act breakup. I was getting so stoked as I was getting close to the end and realizing that they were just weathering the storm together and communicating like mad crazy and then it happened, and it was a little dumb. But when they got back together I laughed a little at how they sort of moved passed what separated them because Anna is just so heartfelt and so funny.

This may have been my favorite Christina Lauren yet 🥹

I was very excited about this book when I heard about it: marriage of convenience, didn't actually get divorced, have to pretend to really be married, only one bed? It had all the markings of a book I would usually love. And I enjoyed it for the most part, but we ended up with a Succession like family story and that's where this fell a little bit flat for me.

I really loved the parts with Anna and West falling in love. But if you're going to dive in hard with toxic familial relationships I need a bit more closure on that in the end, more than what we got in this book. I liked this book, but felt pacing and story were a bit off. But Christina and Lauren always write a good time so I'm still glad I read this one. More glad I checked it out from my local library.

oh i’m disappointed as hell!

i was really excited going into this because from the cover and description i thought it was gonna be similar to the unhoneymooners. i really loved that book and it’s been hard for me to connect with a christina lauren book since then so i thought this would be a new fav. boy was i wrong! there was absolutely no fucking chemistry here, there was no angst which doesn’t make sense because it’s a marriage of convenience. i just really wanted more from the two characters but whatever! i guess i need to give it up, there will never be another unhoneymooners for me.

spoilers

plot holes so big you could fly the plane to singapore through them, this fake (yet legal) marriage romance stretches the how much can i believe no one in this Succession inspired family would have done some background work on Anna years before especially with inheritance money at stake.

low key villain rich people behavior combined with a plot moppet heroine who espouses "money isn't everything" but ends the story with a nipple sized diamond ring and Egyptian linen sheets.

a final act sexual harassment scandal that conveniently is thrown at the hero but IS NOT REALLY HIS FAULT was really the last straw for me.

narrators Patti Murin and Jon Root did a great job making this an entertaining, if not successful, romance.

Pretty woman in paradise. 💋🏝️☀️

Really though…if you’ve seen pretty woman, you’ll see lots of similarities! This was a cute romance/perfect beach read for the summer or a tropical vacation.

The characters definitely have their flaws but it makes them easier to connect to relate with. Although, if I’m being honest I thought Anna could be slightly immature at times which mostly just made me roll my eyes. 😂 Scenery and storyline were great though even if it isn’t very original. So grab a pina colada and settle in for a fun read! 🍹

I haven’t really read anything by this author so let me know if you have any suggestions! (Or even any other good beach reads. 😉)

As someone who's totally obsessed with Christina Lauren's books, I was all hyped up for this one, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint in the slightest.

I was completely committed in Anna Green and Liam "West" Weston's adventure from the minute we first met. The idea of a fictitious marriage developing into something more is always intriguing, but Christina Lauren gives it a special twist that made me want to flip the pages even more.

At first, I'll admit, it took me a minute to vibe with Anna, but I started to love her really fast! Such a strong, independent, and surprisingly real heroine, Anna Green captivated me with her charm and unyielding will. Even in the face of the Weston dynasty's glitz, she stays loyal to herself and doesn't let the extravagance of her surroundings dominate her. And her humor is amazing! I was laughing so hard at the Twilight reference! Even in this snooty, wealthy environment she never asked for, she is unabashedly herself, and I loved that!

And then there is Liam Weston, who is such a fascinating contrast to Anna's boundless energy with his own internal struggle between duty and desire. Being a descendant of the Weston Foods dynasty, Liam struggles with the pressures of his family and is divided between wanting more from life and the wealth. It's heartbreaking and incredibly affecting to watch him gradually change into a guy prepared to defy tradition for the sake of love.

I have to say that Anna and Liam's unquestionable chemistry. Their relationship is unforgettable and thrilling at the same time. Their banter is full of wit and humor, and their vulnerable moments are deeply touching.

Even though a few of the supporting characters felt a little underdeveloped, they still gave the narrative depth and richness by acting as allies and opponents to our main characters.

The combination of humor and romance in "The Paradise Problem" is too good to resist. Ideal summertime reading!

This book was so much fun! I love a good marriage of convenience troupe and this had an interesting twist to it. The heroine, Anna, was chaotic and wild in the best way and Liam was a bit more on the buttoned-up side, but a true gem. I loved the two of them together! The family dynamic was interesting but I loved the way the story ended.
