this was an intriguing one, perfect for fans of dark academia, contemporary mysteries, lgbtqia characters, boarding school settings, and entitled kids seemingly (possibly literally) getting away with murder. it kept me guessing constantly, had layers of secrecy and mystery and drama i didn’t expect, and ended with twists i enjoyed. flipping the adventures of huckleberry finn on its head to tell the story from the enslaved jim’s point of view, this one was eye-opening and fantastically written and full of action. i was blown away by the way this one pulled back the curtain on living as an enslaved person, code-switching often as to play to what the white folks expected, living in endless fear, doing anything to support their families and communities while being mercilessly tortured and used and forced into labor (and other awful things).
truly a masterpiece, a classic, a must-read....more

i really appreciated the author’s note in this one, with his thoughts about the reality and tragedy of how so, so many native girls and women have gone and still go missing without enough (if any) care, coverage, police involvement, awareness, and ultimately, resolutions, reunifications, and, ideally, prevention of it happening in the first place. it’s devastating and such a display of racism and white privilege and colonialism and so many other sicknesses in our world. i’m glad stories like this exist to help make more people aware and to help turn the tides toward a safer, more just world where this doesn’t happen and all of our sisters and daughters are safe. (lord, let it be so.)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this one that will stay with me!...more

as one book clubber said last night — this one took something pretty dry and boring (cartography) and made it really fun and exciting, and i really liked it! ...more
