What I used in a response to a comp/stat meeting when I realized that in my area of responsibility crime had significantly increased from the month prior was a simple approach of what tools were readily available without any significant cost to the agency. I put out a directive that focused on data showing what time, day of week, the route that suspects would have taken, and had them stand outside their cruisers with their traffic vests on monitoring traffic, and had their sergeant checking on them, which gave another unit in the areas. This simple no cost approach reduced crime in this area over 50% for the next month proving that a simple approach is usually the most effective approach to crime reduction.
