For instance, while wrapping up a project on optimizing cloud infrastructure, I reached out to former clients and tapped into emerging industry trends, which secured my next gig without downtime.

Working in a a large organization, I need to understand that I need to leverage my past success stories and help future customers as efficiently as possible. To showcase my work, I develop success stories (one pager) and short presentations of 1 to 3 slides for development meetings with our customers. These slides are used by all teams in our cluster or business unit to create greater visibility. If you are successful with this approach, you can create value for the next customer more efficiently and quickly, which helps to develop a long-term relationship with your customer.

If you want to be successful continous learning is unavoidable. I highly recommend to not focus on the newest trends as most of these are not a long term trend. Find your niche where you have fun and can imagine to continue learning. As an architect you want to develop a T-Profile of a generalist, so over the years you can gather experience in many areas. Personally I always focused on infrastructure (Active Directory, GPOs, Modern Workplace, Hybrid Cloud), but kept enjoying to learn how to combine my skills into a team to deploy next gen firewalls in the cloud or a CRM system and learn architectural aspects from these areas. Overall being an System Architect is a marathon, so focus on things that you enjoy vs. "the next big thing".

In consulting, the success or failure of a project quickly impacts a service provider’s reputation. Word of mouth is crucial for business development, with satisfied clients offering references and case studies to support expansion. Despite expertise, consulting firms face constant judgment, and occasionally, this leads to dishonesty about successes. Successful consulting firms recognize their strengths, invest in consistent success patterns, and handle setbacks gracefully. They recognize that memory is ever-lasting in the consulting business. A scornful person will have her day! Therefore, collective memory serves as a valuable tool, offering lessons and successes to navigate the ups and downs of an extremely competitive landscape.

Develop long term relationships with your customers and partners. Being in IT consulting and especiality in a very well networked component like IT Architecture, you want to invest into long term development and not your personal quick wins (money). Focus on developing a reputation by delivering in time and budget and especially what you promised. If you have the opportunity to save a customer by going the extra mile, I would always recommend to make that investment. Also keep in mind that helping a company means helping one or several persons, which might one day return that favor.

I believe one that this is not listed that should always be our number one is astounding customer service. Customer service is not just saying what the customer wants to hear; it's about listening to their needs and being able to come up with successful ideas to push the project to be bigger than the last. Customer service is saying hello with a smile to the secretary at the front desk because these are the things the customer is really impacted by.
