Documentation should be done during and after collecting or analyzing digital evidence; record every step, action, and decision taken and provide supporting evidence and explanations. Validation should be done before presenting or using digital evidence in court; test accuracy, consistency, trustworthiness of data and tools/techniques used. Lastly, when presenting or using digital evidence in court use clear language/visuals to explain relevance, authenticity, reliability, privacy of evidence and methodology/results of analysis.

Gathering, Preserving & Analyzing Digital Evidence, in a way that is Suitable for Presentation in a Court of Law.
The VERY BEST computer / digital forensics examiners have an extensive IT background. Why/How? Simple... One cannot fully understand the data if one doesn't understand the underlying technology. Knowing how data is stored on a device includes understanding the software (programming, databases), firmware, architecture and how the hardware works. Does one have to be a "Triple E"? No.. but it couldn't hurt. lol
