Just like any other management career venture, Information Technology consulting requires strong commercial aptitude to guarantee success. Therefore, there is a need to deploy excellent business skills from the outset. Skills like business planning/research, design thinking, marketing, sales, networking, product management, partnership management, stakeholder management, contract negotiation, closing deals, customer relation management, quality improvement and presentation skills cannot be overemphasised to start a successful career in IT consulting. So, developing skills from an experience at the intersection of entrepreneurship and innovation or technology management is a recommendation to start a career in IT consulting.

Communication is critical in consulting. You need to understand your client’s needs, their environment, desired state, deliverables, and overall expectations. You have to be able to communicate your experience in similar engagements and that you understand what the client is asking for from you. You must be able to keep communication open between you and all the stakeholders and actively engage with your client and, if you have them, your sales team. Finally, when the engagement is completed you need to understand if you fulfilled all expectations and if the client could have changed anything about what they experienced. Every step of the process requires the bi-directional communication between all parties involved.

In my experience communication is one of the most undervalued skills in IT. The people who have stood out to be exceptional in their product management/analytics roles are the ones who can tell a story to articulate the internal/external customers' needs. Moreover, effective communication facilitates team coordination; stakeholder engagement; problem resolution and risk management.

The ability to rapidly acquire and apply new knowledge expertly is the most important skill for an IT consultant. If you are not comfortable being ignorant and rapidly curing that ignorance, you will probably not survive long as an IT consultant.

In a changing world where tech is the next big thing after pizza, the ability to adapt by getting in on new knowledge bases is basically a topnotch skill. There are technologies, researches and discoveries out there, that if learned will open up more discoveries never seen before, especially with the level of curiosity the newer generation have for technology.

Due to the rapidly evolving nature of technology, it is important to stay ahead of the latest trends, tools, and best practices. Beyond the pedagogy and courses developed by formal educational institutions for the development of IT human capacity, verified learning platforms on the internet and tech professional networks are invaluable channels of growing learning skills as a starter IT consultant. Here are some key learning skills that could be developed: Intellectual Curiosity, Teaching Capability, Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving, Adaptability, Time Management, Note-Taking, Archiving, Collaborative Learning, Knowledge Reflection, Continuous Improvement, Feedback and Iteration.

Often underestimated, yet pivotal, especially in ambiguous projects. As a consultant, my experience has shown that soft skills can make or break a project. Beyond requirements, interpreting office politics and dynamics greatly influences project success. Adaptability, empathy, and conflict resolution are as crucial as technical expertise.

Your primary values as a consultant to your client are correctness and integrity. You will not always be correct, but your customers are paying you to be correct, and to tell them the truth. In the early 2000s I ran into an issue with a competitor who was providing much fluffier, comforting penetration testing reports than I did, and I was losing business. I stayed the course and the business came back, because saying "well, sure you left one door of the bank unlocked, but the other entrances were all locked!" may make the client feel better, but that unlocked door really needed to be pointed out with a big red flashing light (for door, read "security vulnerability"). Be correct, be honest, and always do what is best for the client.

Resilience... you'll hear "No" a lot. You need to have a passion for IT and a commitment to excellence. You need to have a creative and analytical mind, a problem-solving and critical-thinking approach, and a customer-oriented and results-driven mindset. You need to have a sense of humor, a sense of empathy, and a sense of responsibility.

No matter how IT savvy you are, there are skills that are very necessary for today's world. One of those skills are the soft skills. Being an analytical, quick-thinking, handy and a indept thinker is a major plus in today's IT world. As a manager I have always used this skill to get things done, and on time. Most times I add a lot of servant attitude to ease the tension of the project.

Convert from time-and-materials billing to fixed-price, value-based billing as soon as you can reliably estimate the amount of effort for a job. This is better for both you and the client: the incentive is for you to work as efficiently as possible, and the customer knows the extent of his exposure. Time tracking is still critical, however. You need it for T&M jobs, and you need it to determine whether you are hitting your targets on fixed price jobs. Unless you have a job that requires it, forget about accounting for fractions of an hour. At the end of the day, honestly estimate your hours spent on each project. At the end of a fixed price job, divide the price by the hours to see your effective rate.

Lembre-se sempre que a consultoria de TI é um processo de tradução. As pessoas que dominam o negócio não entendem a língua do nerd e vice-versa.
