Educating ourselves about the medications is crucial in our daily routine. For instance, oral chemotherapy. There are some oral chemo that is given in a very low dose, then increase it in time. Working on the med-surg/ chemo floor you are pulled in every directions. And if you are not knowledgeable about certain drugs and oral chemo to be exact, committing medical errors is just within reach. Educate yourself and others, precept and if you are not sure what you are administering, call the pharmacy.

We are human and we are capable of making mistakes time and time again. One thing I always emphasized is to take time to read the label of the drugs , know what you are administering and be vigilant what’s in the package. Sometimes mechanical errors can be made and instead of 1 pill in the package, there are 2 pills in the package. Being a prudent nurse, will I administer both or call the pharmacy to bring me another package? You bet I will call the pharmacy.

I totally agree. Plan a course of actions, when will it be implemented and periodical evaluation is needed of the course of actions are of good use to minimize as total elimination of medication errors is somewhat impossible.
