You're managing a remote team in different locations. How do you keep everyone connected and motivated?

Clear goals are the foundation of successful remote team management. They provide a shared sense of purpose and direction, ensuring everyone is working towards the same objectives. To set clear goals, define specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives that are easily understandable by all team members. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks to maintain momentum and provide a sense of accomplishment. Regularly review and update goals to reflect changing priorities and provide feedback to team members on their progress. By doing so, you'll foster a sense of accountability, motivation, and focus among your remote team, even when you're not physically together.

Having had to learn very quickly how to do this during covid, the key was communication. Treating teams or zoom like an office space, and regularly dropping by to check on colleagues, along with scheduled all team catch ups helped to keep the team spirit we had fostered prior to lockdowns forcing this. As we got used to it it became easier, and the feeling of isolation that is possible through a lack of shared physical space was countered by a shared virtual space. Maintaining a physical presence is also good but it doesn't have to be daily or weekly but, as ever, communication, expectation setting and helping everyone deliver their objectives is the measure of how successful one has been.

This helps create a sense of community and camaraderie.

To keep a remote team connected and motivated, establish regular communication through video meetings, use collaboration tools like Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, ZOOM and set clear goals and expectations, recognize achievements, and foster a positive team culture by encouraging social interactions and team-building activities online.

I have found the following useful to maintain team connectivity: - Daily brief, focused updates - Weekly team meetings (in-depth discussions and goal setting) - Bi-weekly 1-on-1s (personalized coaching and feedback) - Monthly virtual town halls (company-wide updates and Q&A) - Quarterly physical meetings where strategy and big ticket items are discussed and planned.

Für Remote-Teams sind regelmäßige Check-Ins unerlässlich. Regelmäßige Einzel- und Team-Meetings sind dafür ein gutes Mittel. Dabei sollte es aber nicht nur um die Arbeit gehen, sondern auch Zeit für persönliche Themen geben, die im Büro gerne an der Kaffeemaschine besprochen werden. Bei Meetings sollte so oft wie möglich die Kamera eingeschaltet sein, da so die Bindung zu den Kollegen gestärkt wird und man nicht die ganze Zeit auf einen schwarzen Bildschirm schaut.

Our office is no longer physical but virtual. Even when we're physically in the same space, we spend more time with headsets than talking or exchanging ideas with the colleague next to us... tools help organize and structure content, and that's why they're essential. Simple minutes can be replaced by an automated way of collecting the essential actions of a meeting and I think that's the way forward. However, tools are only part of the need to change the way we work and they should support and sustain that change, not being the change itself.

Collaboration tools plays a crucial role. It needs to be mobile first, user friendly and omnichannel. One good feature in my pocket will be scheduled messaging. It allows check-ins, follow up, sharing of thoughts at convenience while respecting work hours.

Recognizing someone's work is, and always has been, the basis of any trust relationship. The types of recognition should be adjusted to the situation and the contribution expected from each person.

El trabajo remoto o híbrido es una realidad hoy en día. Trabajemos en que los equipos, estén enfocados en los resultados, asumamos un rol colaborativo pero recalquemos que la confianza es clave para mantener al equipo motivado y eficiente. En mi caso, y de mis equipos, al estar en ventas, requerimos de viajes constantes, visitas a clientes que implica en muchas ocasiones no estar disponibles en ciertos momentos. One of the main demands that many employees make today in order to agree to work for an organization. Salary or career are losing priority to what many see as flexible management of their own working time. There are, and always will be, situations of 'injustice' in relation to the type of work in some professions, but I would argue that the concept of flexibility is not about 'working when you want' but about adapting your deliverables to the commitments you have made. Not forgetting that we often need time together at the same times or we'll be undermining the 'flexibility' of others.
