I worked for UPSC as a principal Architect, and my main aim was to collect all data coming from different examinations of UPSC, migrate existing data in different logical and physical formats, process batch data, and use real-time processing wherever necessary. I learned this one in hard way. In my initial projects as a Data architect, while architecture design on-paper was well thought through and covered most aspects, but somehow we weren’t able to implement it. Creating a great design or buying best tools available in market won’t make it success. Rather it is more about how effectively you can communicate your ideas and designs to other teams, how you can rally other teams for a common goal and shared vision and how effectively you can translate business requirements to technical team and vice versa. Learn and adopt the language of your target audience so you can explain though in their words. In some case you may even have to simplify things to almost kindergarten level. Not everybody is familiar with data related concepts and beat practices. A great way to accomplish this is to have discussions with key business users (SMEs), compiling and subsequently sharing a document that describes their business at an conceptual level based on your understanding using their own language. This would be the foundation of the shared language used in any follow up discussions It will result in a stable more trustworthy communication channel.
