Clearly defined Service Level Agreements are key to keeping your customer happy and your team from burn out. Proactively educate your key customer stakeholders on what the scope/SLAs are, and if the contractual support doesn't meet their needs, how can you help them add more services (with budget and fee). If the SLAs aren't well defined, collaboratively work with the contractual customer to refine the requirements to an executable level will mutually agreed to definition.

One thing I have noticed is that projects which span a long period of time inherently end up with much more scope creep, mainly due to technology evolution- so it’s important to think about what emerging and future technologies may be required or available by the time your project is due to be completed. I was asked to manage the end of a project which spanned almost 10yrs and by the time the commissioning was underway, parts of the equipment had to be upgraded from analogue to digital due to the length of time it took to get to the commissioning stage.
