Use linear SVM, regression & Naive Bayes. Training time of model will increase exponentially with the number of parameters. Cut down the unnecessary ones. Use PCA to reduce dimensions. Use LDA & NNMF especially for NLP problems.

Build models, keep one for baseline comparison, visualize their output & check the score of evaluation metrics. Your model must have power of predictability & generalization. Compare your results with others. Then, you will realise how much you are trailing behind or doing well. If it goes wrong, inspect & redesign your problem. Check for anamolies in data preprocessing. Refine your model iteratively, change your approach, try other algorithms, adjust your features & hyperparameters (HPs). This gets painful & exhausting. To escape tedious process, go for automated ones like Amazon SageMaker, which automatically fine-tunes the HPs.
