How can Executive Coaches find the right mentor?

Our developmental needs are definitely the starting point for finding a mentor. However, we sometimes face difficulties in finding mentors around us who are suitable for our needs. In such circumstances, it seems to me that we don't have to limit our candidates to real persons. Even fictional characters from novels, movies, and manga can be effective. Even if direct contact with the person for a conversation is not possible, there are still many things we can learn. It would be wonderful if we can learn from anyone and anything.

I believe, like professional athletes, you should craft a team of support around you. Athletes have support systems like their sport coach, their strength and conditioning coach, nutrionist, therapist/mental performance coach, financial advisor, agent, etc. Of course, your group of people will be different but each are experts in different areas and you can leverage their knowledge to grow. Ultimately, what you want to learn about so you can become the future aspirational version of yourself is the best start.

It's less about finding the right mentor, and instead recognizing the need for mentorship. Many executive coaches are quite used to helping others. However, they may not recognize that they too need coaching. In this light, a good ear is better than none. Now, ideally, if you can find someone who has walked your path and knows the pitfalls, great. But don't focus to heavily on "the right" mentor, just reach out for help. You're valuable. You're important. Take care of you.

In my experience coaches should always be looking to build and enhance our skills. How can we ask our clients to invest in their own coaching if as coaches were not always looking to improve. Find a coach/mentor who can help you coach bigger and bolder than you think you're capable of. When you stretch, so will your clients.
