What is the best way to develop a leadership philosophy?

Self-discovery is the bedrock of an authentic and fulfilling life and effective leadership. Knowing yourself lets you express your thoughts, feelings, and desires. It forms the foundation upon which everything else is built. As a leader, authenticity is paramount; those who lack self-awareness may mimic others but can never be truly great leaders. They end up living a life in someone else's shoes, unable to inspire and connect on a deeper level.

The principles we follow in life and business guide us through the decisions and actions we take daily. But they also provide the motivation to strive for that next goal, that next step when we don't really feel like it. I have written before about the Three Pillars of Success that I lean on. Humility, Character and Integrity. Character is my compass, Integrity are those actions that represent the manifestation of that character and Humility is that which separates leaders from autocrats. Humility protects from the narcissist. So once these principles are identified, now what? I can't control everything, I can only control me and my actions, but living with integrity attracts those like minded people.

Leading in someone else's style is like trying to work as a carpenter in a suit and tie – it feels uncomfortable and prevents you from giving your best. Authentic leadership, rooted in being true to yourself, is the key to effectiveness and building trust with your team.
