I would like to burst the myth; not necessarily interviewers want to see your looks, but they want to see how you make an effort holistically. Dress your part. Understand color combinations. Wear ironed clothes Comb your hair well. Make sure the light falls on your face so that your facial expressions are visible. Go with that wide smile and confidence. Just 10 minutes of visual prep can make so much of a difference in your overall positioning.

In my experience I truly believe that if you don’t make eye contact that you are not trustworthy.However after I became a global recruiter based on the country of origin I found that some countries find that looking at someone’s eyes is disrespectful.

Eye contact can be difficult especially if you have anxiety. A trick that works for me is to not stare directly into the interviewer(s) eyes but more so at their forehead or even beyond them. It's a trick of the eye if you can't hold eye contact for very long but still want to be 'looking' at them.

Eye contact can be tricky sometimes because of some cultural distinctions, but I have found that in professional interviews it is always better to make eye contact with all of the participants during an interview. As you speak to the interviewer(s) you can make a better connection with them if you engage with them by making eye contact while listening and responding. In today’s world we find ourselves in many virtual meetings and interviews so it is very important that we plan ahead by preparing our camera angles and being conscious of our facial expressions. It is helpful to practice beforehand and recognize certain expressions and get feedback from co-workers and friends on your facial expressions during an interaction. One thing to work on is your smile. Be genuine and start with your smile because it will also ease the tension on all sides involved. I agree that some key gestures to avoid are yawning, looking off into the distance, frowning and engaging with others who are outside the view of the camera.

Following up is important because it is a reflection of how you handle your business. If that was a valued customer, following up would would be automatic. It demonstrates that you care about outcomes and can be trusted to complete a process, task, and an important matter. Good communication skills written or verbal are signs of a strong leader. Take a moment in your pre interview prep to think about attributes, skills set and experiences that you feel can differentiate you and why. Make certain at the end, when those questions are asked, you take that opportunity to highlight what you prepared and why it can provide value to the potential employer. That is a much more memorable experience for everyone!
