From the first day at the construction site, proper standards are to be established for everyone, coupled with open communication and regular check-ups. It is considerably easier to integrate new teams into the site when these standards are in place. Secondly, everything emanates from higher and middle management. If they adhere to standards, exercise care, and enforce correct safety measures, all operations proceed smoothly. The third aspect involves cultivating awareness through continuous check-ups, information boards, and corrective actions as deemed necessary.

In My Experience, A construction workmen may be considered ill-literate based on the standards of the social system however, sometimes this results in maintaining their value system, they respect their seniors and are emotional. (Not following EHS Practices is also an expression of unacceptance.) Positive and empathic emotions could motivate them. 1.Understand their Problem and provide easy pratical solutions- Work more on your end and keep minial on their part for execution. 2. Regular positive safety talks and value adding safety trainings along with the resources for implementation. 3. Working with them - Sometimes they have simple yet effective ideas of their own! 4.Recognizing and rewarding positive attitudes and actions.

The importance of adequate training and resources cannot be overstated. It is far to common to throw out rules and regulations without any explanation or training, which can lead to non-compliance. One very common example in construction is fall protection. Simply handing people a personal fall arrest harness and a bunch of different types of connections will no ensure its proper use (or use at all). It has to fit properly. It has to be properly adjusted. It has to be cleaned, stored, and cared for. And the set up for using fall protection is not always obvious or straightforward. Provide training, and provide information on what to do when they encounter a situation they cannot resolve. Who do they call? Where can they find instructions?

It is all about caring about your coworkers. It is so much more than wanting yourself to go home with all your fingers and toes intact, but when you start genuinely caring for those working alongside you, you instinctively start looking out for their well being as well. I believe recognition and reward breeds a better industry. From the bottom up, if a site cleaner is doing a great job - reward it. If a carpenter has offered his experience and knowledge to save the client money - reward it. Building a team is all about recognising how important everyone’s voice is.

Rewards need to be meaningful. Relevant, relatable and reliable. A reward should have the Three R's. It is and should never be about the value of the reward. It should be intrinsic. We passed around an antique bowling trophy as a travelling "good catch" award. It was pride based; some people got teary when they won it for the month. Simple stickers have unheard of value as awards/recognition, especially on construction sites.

When workers receive appreciation and rewards for following safety guidelines, they are more likely to repeat those behaviors, creating a safety culture within the construction site When workers receive recognition for their good behavior related to safety, it boosts their morale and increases their engagement with safety protocols. Lead by example first, then force it by organization internal procedures and HSE, safety is not an option, it's an obligation that must be strictly followed. Whoever violate this must be terminated without thinking. However in parallel safety rewards on a monthly basis or quarterly basis must be in place for those who commit to HSE rules and regulations.

Demonstrate the way ,you expect them to be.Create a environment which showcase the objective. Empower and mentor them. Make an example among them ,who is compliant. Recognise the compliant and drive the culture through them. Eradicate blaming culture and empathetically approach noncompliances by the workmen. Listen to thier concerns and involve them in decision making. Leverage technological advancement to instill the importance of following safety rules at site. Wherever feasible, Encourage supervised family members walkaround at certain intervals .

Motivate the site team for small initiatives they took for participation in safety programs and involve improving safety at the workplace. Be a role model.

Empowerment is such a powerful tool in reforming the construction industry. In my opinion, the industry features so many excellent individuals in set areas of the business - client, consultant and construction. To be able to blend the groups knowledge and experience at an early stage can only benefit cost, programme and quality.

Nothing above will work unless you (management) fullfill your basic responsibility. 1. Provide safe place of work 2. Provide safe work equipment 3. Provide training 4. Provide PPE 5. Provide instructions and supervision (competent) And most importantly basic welfare needs namely good housing with amenities after work, salaries on time, place to eat, rest with adequate health and safety facilities and clean sanitation at workplace, realistic first aid and potable drinking water. Once these are in place anyone not following Health and safety requirements of the workplace are not fit to work. Serious behavioral change programs must be in place to identify the individual problems or terminated when criminal minds do not want to change.
