What sustainability strategy frameworks have been successful in your industry?

Circularity is key in retail. At Alshaya Group, we practice what we preach. We're reducing waste by reengineering processes, ensuring our products are designed for a second life, and turning end-of-life goods into resources. This approach isn't just sustainable; it's economically strategic, trimming costs and fostering profitability. Our initiative to repurpose PET waste from our eateries into fresh packaging is a prime example. Circularity isn't the future—it's the present, and it's profitable.

In the corporate sector, effective sustainability strategies involve supporting the social sector to create models for sustainable social and economic growth. This includes investing in community development projects, fostering partnerships with non-profits, and championing initiatives that empower marginalized groups, contributing to a more inclusive and resilient society.

The Natural Step Framework is a science-based approach guiding organizations to tackle root causes of unsustainability. It outlines four sustainability principles informing the design of products, services, and processes aligned with natural cycles and limits. Additionally, it offers a strategic planning method facilitating progress from current reality to envisioned sustainability.

Establishing a sustainable workplace involves implementing several strategies. Transitioning to a paperless office reduces waste and power consumption. Encourage digital communication and utilize route planning software for distribution to optimize routes and minimize fuel consumption. Additionally, reduce paper cup usage by promoting reusable alternatives. Integrate a smart office automation system for lighting and air conditioning, optimizing energy use based on occupancy and environmental conditions. These initiatives collectively create an eco-friendly and efficient workspace, fostering a culture of sustainability across the office, warehouse, stores, and training center.

While specific frameworks may vary across industries, successful approaches often prioritize a holistic view of sustainability, considering economic, social, and environmental factors. By adopting and implementing these frameworks effectively, organizations can not only mitigate risks associated with environmental degradation and social inequity but also capitalize on opportunities for innovation and long-term growth in a more sustainable manner.

It opposes the linear production model reliant on resource extraction and disposal. It suggests three strategies: waste and pollution reduction, product and material reuse, and natural system regeneration.

The Shared Value Framework emphasizes creating economic and societal value simultaneously. It acknowledges the interconnectedness of a company's competitiveness and community well-being. It proposes redefining products/markets, reconfiguring value chains, and enabling local cluster development to achieve shared value.

The B Corp Framework certifies businesses that prioritize both purpose and profit. It assesses social and environmental performance across governance, workers, customers, community, and environment. Companies must legally embed stakeholder interests in their structure and culture to qualify.

The Future-Fit Framework outlines minimum environmental and social thresholds for sustainability. It includes 23 break-even goals covering a company's impacts on people and the planet, while also promoting the creation of positive societal value.

- Familiarize yourself with the 17 SDGs and their targets to understand their relevance to the energy sector. -Assess your organization's current initiatives, operations, and impact against the SDGs using the SDG Compass Framework. -Identify priority SDGs that align closely with your business objectives and stakeholders' interests. -Engage cross-functional teams to develop strategies and action plans to address the prioritized SDGs. -Integrate SDG targets into performance metrics and reporting mechanisms to track progress over time. -Collaborate with industry peers, governments, and NGOs to amplify impact and drive collective action towards achieving the SDGs.

We know that over 50% of companies engage in Greenwashing in their reports, making it difficult to validate true success stories. With this in mind, I understand that the simplest tools to implement will have the most success. I don't see small and medium-sized Brazilian companies implementing practices to comply with GRI, as the level of complexity would lead them into greenwashing. Therefore, I believe that following the SDGs in their practices, as well as methodologies for continuous improvement such as Cleaner Production, tend to deliver better results in the short term until the company grows large enough to tackle more complex projects. Sustainability doesn't need to be complex; it needs to be true and purposeful!
