You’re an Electrical Design professional with a long list of tasks. How do you decide what to tackle first?

I prefer to follow some key factors in such situation where I am loaded with multiple activities or tasks. 1. Criticality & Schedule of assigned task: Understand how crucial each task is to the project's success. Discuss deadlines with your leads or Project team and plan your work accordingly. 2. Impact on Others: Think about how delaying or neglecting a task might affect other teams and disciplines. Adjust your schedule to minimize disruptions and ensure smooth collaboration. 3. Input Requirements: Identify tasks that need information or contributions from others before you can start. Plan your workflow to avoid getting stuck waiting for missing inputs. Once decided above factors, prioritize the tasks accordingly.

...work applicable to the project scope with regards to execution projects first, then project studies, then project proposals...

One thing I find useful in this regard is the Eisenhower Matrix, which can be easily found through a simple Google search. This matrix has helped me prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency.

The points mentioned in the article were entirely accurate and relevant. I would like to add a point that expedites the engineering documentation generation process. Typically, large consulting engineering firms have very lengthy standard operating procedures, making it impractical to refer to them comprehensively in each new project. Therefore, it is better for a designer to spend their free time studying them, condensing key terms and their previous experiences into a mind map or roadmap. This may take some time initially, but its long-term impact is truly amazing

First thing is to write down all tasks in to do list and sort them by date of deadlines and size of tasks. First update in list the tasks, those can be finished in less than 5 minutes likes answering some questions, small updates on designs, etc. Secondly look for what is urgently required and go through deadlines. I will finish the list of small items those require time on each tasks less than 5 minutes. After that I will go to big tasks and work on them one by one as per deadline dates. Once all these are completed, I will work on rest of pending tasks, those were no so important in beginning.

Par exemple sans la conception du schéma, il vous sera délicat de passer à la simulation, ou à l'assemblage des composants et éléments. Absolutely, planning your schedule effectively is crucial for productivity. Breaking tasks into manageable chunks, setting realistic goals, and allocating time wisely are key strategies. Additionally, incorporating buffer time for unexpected issues ensures smoother progress. Utilizing tools like time trackers or alarms can aid in staying organized and focused. Balancing workload is essential to prevent burnout and ensure tasks are completed efficiently.

Prioritize tasks based on time sensitivity, impact, and effort. A task that is low impact, low effort, highly time-sensitive should be taken care of before high impact, low effort, non time-sensitive tasks. Taking care of time-sensitive tasks is critical. These often have a tendency to rear their head and be more of a hassle when taken care of at the 11th hour. At those moments, it's clear that you should have done the work when it arose, but by mis-prioritizing non time-sensitive tasks ahead of time-sensitive ones always leads to a level of assumed risk. This happens because often, time-sensitive tasks are not interesting, novel, or challenging, so there is a sense of boredom associated and lack of desire to do that job. Do it anyways.

I will prioritize and attach the task most important and keep doing to the next until I finish with the easy an not to urgently ones.

I assets my task and prioritize the task depending on time schedule. And then plan my task in several segments. Finish the task by every segment. Lastly I review my work and release it.

The first and foremost aspect of Design Engineering is to know about the importance of the task. On the other hand, small challenges will always appear during a project, but you can't forget the main challenge of the project and your obligation will be to assess whether these small changes are really necessary or are creating other problems for the future and perhaps even derailing the project.

Post indicates valuable items however I will add 2 improvements based on learning from electrical engineering & Design experience from Asset & projects: 1- Identify and list down key tasks at first place. If we miss a key task at first place all else including assessment, prioritisation, planning and execution can not be flawless. When it comes to electrical design, identify business risk/mitigation or opportunity/ business improvement desired through this electrical design at first place. Then assess and define design basis n philosophy as per required engineering solution, its value, criticality and importance. 2. Prioritisation comes before planning & scheduling. Focus on important tasks first. Less important tasks are distractors.
