We must be seen to be "walking the talk" Conducting regular site walks and task observations ensuring that the controls prescribed in the TA / JSEA / SWMS are in place and that the teams are fully aware of the risks and safe work methods. Having conversations with the teams and getting their involvement in the development of the safe work methods.

It is essential for the safety culture to be driven at all levels to as a non negotiable cultural aspect of day to day work. Zero harm in the office, on the road, on site and at home has to be exemplary across the organizations.

It is extremely important that a safety professional physically walks active jobs sites daily if possible. This allows for adjustments to safety protocol to happen in real time due to the constant changing nature of job sites. Taking an active role to be ground level with teammates also builds trust and respect necessary for the leadership role that a safety professional assumes.

Accept workers will make errors, work with them and learn from them to design work tasks in partnership, don't rely on procedures and rules to keep people safe, as one day someone will deviate and when that happens you don't want them to die.

In my experience the key to keeping Safety upfront and in the minds of everybody is getting Feedback from the Workers of every Trade On-Site. Having had the experience of working on various Sites allows me the chance to combine various plans for Emergency Preparedness and Evacuation of Work Sites. Knowing that a Constructor of one Site was looking for an Evacuation Plan to be put in effect one day, the Workers were prepared and everybody On-Site performed our Evacuation. From the Security Guards who timed us, to the Project Manager who participated we were able to Evacuate all Workers from a 20 acre Site to our Muster Point within 9 minutes! We reviewed our Procedures and improved our actual Evacuation time with Feedback from all involved.

To prioritize safety at construction the most important thing is provision of wellbeing facilities to take of basic human needs i.e. Hygienic washroom, Canteen & rest rooms. I observed many of serious incidents are happened at construction sites due to lack of wellbeing facilities.
