First thing first is to assess what are the changes and if those changes are mission critical to the final product. If these changes aren't mission critical then they should be deprioritized and not be considered into the current project scope and timeline. If these changes are mission critical then the project manager has to assess the magnitude of the changes and the impact to the timeline and current resources allocation then work out the revised plan detailing which deadlines can be shifted (by how much) and which can be maintained, if additional resources have to be added on certain activities and if additional budget is required.

The most important role of a project manager's day to day job is to ensure that the stakeholders are informed and engaged through informal and formal communication channels (openly and honestly) in order to ensure that their expectations and emotions are delicately managed through clear understanding of the constraints, uncertainties and risks shrouding the project across all the key stakeholders. This also builds camaraderie within the project team through shared accountability and ownership as a team to bring the project to a successful completion.

When managing projects, it is vital to remain always flexible and quickly adapt and adjust as these skills sometimes can be the fine line between able to complete the project successfully or flop completely. The project manager must be able to 'smell if there are any troubles up ahead' and quickly take the necessary course of action to manage any potential setbacks and risks.
