Congratulations to Joel S. Weissman, PhD for winning the ABIM Foundation's John A. Benson Jr., MD Professionalism Article Prize for the article, "How Hospitals Are Addressing the Effects of Racism: A Mixed-Methods Study of Hospital Equity Officers." Published in Health Affairs, the article discusses the challenges hospital equity officers face – like racist beliefs, biased policies, and lack of diversity – and address these through tracking incidents, reviewing algorithms, and forming partnerships. Dr. Jamie L. Garfield at Temple University - Lewis Katz School of Medicine launched UNIQUE, a series of training sessions for providing culturally competent care to gender-diverse patients. UNIQUE involves local gender-diverse individuals in developing a comprehensive curriculum. This initiative is part of the Building Trust Through Diversity, Health Care Equity, Inclusion, and Diagnostic Excellence in Internal Medicine Training grant program. UNIQUE aims to bridge health care gaps and empower physicians with the confidence to provide equitable care.
