    Champions of paid family leave programs are rejoicing at the newly delivered Paid Leave For All petition to congress while many employers and long-time parents hold their breath. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen an attempt at a National Paid Family Leave initiative, I remember testifying in front of budget committees explaining the importance of these programs nearly 5 years ago. Nor is this the first initiative of its kind that has been voter led, I was able to witness and be a part of the CO FAMLI program here in my home state. Despite these incremental victories, we are still here nearly 10 years after I began my journey in the LOA space, and we are still looking for the Federal Gov’t to fill the paid family leave gap. When I had my second daughter, I was in between companies and put in a position where I had to choose between taking unpaid leave or returning to work early. I landed a job I couldn’t turn down and ultimately returned to work 30 days after having my daughter because I did not have access to a mandated paid leave benefit. Had there been a Federal paid family leave program, I know that she and I would have had a lot more time together and I would have been less anxious about balancing motherhood with a corporate career. #NoPaidLeaveCostMe As someone who is considered an expert in this space, I find it fascinating to see the delicate balance of employee needs and business expectations come to play during this debate. Our clients and all employers could certainly benefit from some National guidance in the form of a program (probably tax funded) and one that could pre-empt State law from complicating benefit policies. I’m excited to continue tracking the development of this personally and finding ways to support our clients at AbsenceSoft as they navigate yet another complicated paid leave challenge.
