One of the goals of #CLA is to make data-driven decisions to improve program performance. To hold more effective trainings for farmers and small businesses, USAID Laos Microenterprise used QR codes and cell phones to collect, analyze, and apply data to tailor training sessions to local needs. Ultimately, the project developed tools that participants liked and understood—resulting in 97 percent of farmers adopting at least one new business skill. Kamaris Family Farm in #Armenia was looking to expand its business and sell poultry products but faced issues with egg quality including thin eggshells, deformed eggs, low laying rate, and light yolk color. Our Farmer-to-Farmer Program in Europe, The Caucasus, and Central Asia brought in volunteer Dannica Wall to work with farmers and find solutions to their egg issues. With 15 years of research, lab, and field experience in animal science and poultry production, Dannica worked with each farmer to assess and understand their unique challenges. Dannica provided recommendations for measuring bird growth, adjustments to the management of facilities, sample diets, and feed ingredients. She also provided training and demonstrations related to artificial insemination and breeding. Our volunteers bring invaluable insight and technical assistance to our projects.
