We are on a mission to transform plants into the world's most efficient protein factories. Makers of Nobell Foods.

About us

Alpine bio is a plant genetics company focused on redefining protein production from the soil up. We believe that replacing resource-intensive production methods with highly efficient and regenerative systems can facilitate rapid, planet-scale change.  Our proprietary biomanufacturing platform makes this possible. Since 2016, we’ve been transforming soybeans into the world’s most efficient protein factories, harnessing their natural ability to create functional proteins at scale and unprecedented efficiency. Our first ingredient, casein, an unstructured dairy protein that gives cheese its stretch, melt, and much of its nutrition, has been developed. We've designed the seeds, grown the plants, purified the protein, and now we're set to begin tastings of our animal-free mozzarella via our brand Nobell Foods in 2025.

We’re excited to share that we have recently achieved our largest planting to date. This all began with asking a question that was, at the time, deemed absurd:  Could dairy proteins be grown in plants? The answer was “Yes.” The result of pursuing that answer, day in and day out for the last eight years, is millions of soybean seeds now growing on a farm in the Midwest. Each one with the capacity to produce the dairy protein casein–proof positive that scalable molecular farming has become a reality. 🔓 Milestone Unlocked: Our biomanufacturing platform, which allows us to grow critical proteins like casein at scale, has now increased its output potential exponentially. 🚜 A profoundly appreciative thank you to NEXAT. By collaborating with the NEXAT team and using their state-of-the-art modular vehicle, we were able to ensure that our planting process was resource-efficient, caused reduced soil compaction, and produced fewer emissions. 🌱 While this planting is a momentous step forward, it’s still just the beginning. We’ve tested over 1,000 unique strategies to accumulate various proteins in plants, and are actively expanding our platform even further. #molecularfarming #biomanufacturing #innovation

Until recently, the term "dairy plant" would instantly conjure images of a facility where milk is extracted, processed, and prepared for distribution. We changed that. So here's an updated definition: Dairy Plant: A multicellular photosynthetic organism designed to produce dairy proteins such as casein. As in, "Alpine Bio now has millions of dairy plants actively growing in the Midwest." #MolecularFarming #ClimateTech #Innovation #Sustainability #AgTech

Molecular farming has the potential to open new markets and create new income opportunities for American soybean growers. This is one of many key takeaways found in a new peer-reviewed article co-authored by American Soybean Association staff Kyle Kunkler and Scott Gerlt. As part of a research topic symposium hosted by Frontiers in Plant Science, the world’s most cited plant science journal, the article explores the transformative potential of molecular farming for soybean growers in great detail. Check out the accompanying carousel for our highlights, or dive deeper by reading ASA’s release on the article and the article itself: 🗞️ American Soybean Association: Work of Kunkler & Gerlt on promising opportunities is peer reviewed & published: https://lnkd.in/g_s_cttC 🔬 Identity preserved plant molecular farming offers value-added opportunity for farmers - Kunkler & Gerlt: https://lnkd.in/gEwHPbpj #MolecularFarming #FoodScience #Agtech #Soybeans #ModernAg

Last week, our very own Magi Richani had the privilege of sharing the stage with Bill Gates to close the Breakthrough Energy Summit in London. The conference was momentous—a pivotal event that brought together all the different pieces of the #netzero puzzle into a single space dedicated to dialogue and collaboration. Our piece of that puzzle is protein: producing the proteins we depend on in a more sustainable and efficient manner through large-scale molecular farming, utilizing existing farmland and partnering with American soybean growers. For us, the element of scale is crucial—not only for achieving net zero but also for the long-term goal of building a more prosperous, protein-abundant future. What impressed us most in London was that a shared focus on scale seemed to be the connective tissue throughout the entire conference. It's easy to be optimistic when you spend the week surrounded by brilliant minds from around the world who are dedicated to ensuring that sustainable innovation doesn’t get stuck in incubation mode or have a failure to launch. We’d like to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone on the Breakthrough Energy team for their hard work in making this event happen. #BESummit24 #MolecularFarming #ClimateTech #Innovation #Sustainability

Today, we're excited to announce the next stage in our evolution: Nobell Foods is becoming Alpine Bio, The Biology Design Company. Since 2016, we have been working to transform plants into the world's most efficient protein factories. This pursuit has been characterized by a singular focus: to construct and refine an all-encompassing end-to-end platform for protein production—a platform that not only allows us to produce proteins but also makes them functional, purifies them, and enables their use as ingredients for end products. Over the last seven years, after testing over 1,000 unique strategies in plants, our relentless R&D efforts have led to a 10X increase in casein expression. We also partnered with farmers to grow our new value-added soybeans, raised $100 million in funding, engineered multiple lines of seeds, expressed 15 unique proteins in plants, and created an animal-free cheese that melts and stretches, which we are currently optimizing for commercialization. Today marks a significant milestone in our journey as our platform is more robust than it has ever been, and we have laid the groundwork for aggressive expansion into other proteins. Going forward, Nobell Foods will transition into a division of Alpine Bio—which will spearhead the cultivation of our proprietary plant-grown casein production and drive the expansion of our ingredients pipeline. Nobell Foods will remain an animal-free dairy brand, bringing animal-free cheese to the world. To keep up to date with what's happening at Nobell, you can sign up for the Nobell newsletter or follow Nobell on Instagram.

Plant-powered optimism at the World Agri-Tech summit. You love to see it. 🌱🌱🌱 A giant and bombastic THANK YOU to the summit organizers for bringing together an exceptional mix of leaders from the diverse worlds of business, technology, and agriculture all under one roof to discuss how we build a more resilient agri-food supply chain.

This week, I had the opportunity to join World Agri-Tech to discuss what scaling and funding a start-up looks like and the type of support needed to make a real, lasting impact on our planet. Despite how financial markets behave, it’s unquestionable that we all need to eat.  Producing more food in a way that is sustainable, affordable and brings everyone along is critical. That’s why at Nobell Foods, we chose to develop plants as efficient factories for protein production. Building a technology platform from scratch is not easy and requires time and capital. And having the right partners along for the journey has been essential. Being deliberate and opting for partners who are invested in the future of food, the well-being of our planet and the next generation makes a massive difference when it comes to scaling ambitious, critical solutions. Thank you to Laurie Bauer for moderating, excited to have had the opportunity to share this panel with Brian Wenngatz from SenteraFrancis Villante from S2G Ventures and Michael Lavin from Germin8 Ventures, who has been an exceptionally helpful investor and believer in Nobell since 2019. I left this panel session feeling optimistic for the future of food and agriculture and I can’t wait to see how innovation shapes the next decade. #WorldAgriTech #AgDay24 #sustainability #innovation #farming #food
