Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee advanced their Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS-ED) spending bill by a vote of 31 to 25. This bill proposes steep cuts and consolidation of programs throughout the Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Education. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) opposes reduced funding for, or the elimination of, any nursing education programs and supports strong investment for our nurse researchers and scientists. The Disability Inclusion in Nursing Grants Program, supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is accepting applications! This initiative seeks to fund innovative projects aimed at dismantling ableism within nursing education and practice, particularly in clinical learning environments. Selected projects will receive funding for three years, with annual costs up to $75,000. Implementing the Essentials and making the move to competency-based education isn’t just an opportunity to improve how nursing students learn—it’s an opportunity for faculty to learn new skills and methodologies as well. Audrey Beauvais, DNP, MSN, MBA, RN, Associate Dean and Associate Professor in the Fairfield University School of Nursing and Health Sciences, said that faculty at her school are eager to learn new ways to improve education. “Our faculty are excited to be able to innovate and think outside the box about what activities will help them improve the competencies of future nurses.” Learn more about Fairfield University’s journey to implement the Essentials and move to CBE:

Competency-based education has been proven to instill more confidence in students who learn under the methodology. Karen Tetz, PhD, RN, Professor and Dean of Nursing at Walla Walla University, said that students who participated in clinical simulations based in CBE found the experiences more rewarding. “When trialing the person-centered care simulation in the chronic illness course using a standardized patient, we set up a home health simulation and student commented that they felt like they were with a real, actual patient … It made them more nervous, but they expressed afterwards that they felt like they had been able to see that they could actually take the information we had talked about during the quarter and implement it with someone who could be a real patient of theirs.” Learn more about Walla Walla University’s journey to implement the Essentials and move to CBE:
