Amtrak’s Susquehanna River Rail Bridge Project is officially underway! Last week we kicked off this important bridge upgrade with our partners at U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Railroad Administration, Maryland Department of Transportation, MDOT MTA, City of Havre de Grace, Town of Perryville and many others. The Susquehanna River Rail Bridge is a vital piece of infrastructure serving approximately 110 daily Amtrak, MARC commuter rail and freight trains. When the project is completed, the existing two-track bridge will be replaced with four total tracks, expanding capacity and allowing for higher speeds. This $2.7 billion project is supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, thanks to a $2.08 billion Fed-State grant announced by FRA. We’re excited to kick off early work on this important bridge upgrade, one of several major Amtrak infrastructure megaprojects now underway or set to begin by the end of 2024! 🙌 Major rehabilitation of the East River Tunnel will begin later this year now that Amtrak has awarded the contract to a joint venture of Skanska and E-J Electric Installation Co. When completed in 2027, this project will provide safer, more reliable travel along the Northeast Corridor through this tunnel that connects intercity trains leaving Manhattan on the NEC north to Boston, as well as commuter services east to Long Island or into Sunnyside Yard. Key Points: 💰 Investment: $1.6B project ensures the modernization and safety of a vital NYC transit link. 🗽 Significance: Essential for seamless travel in and out of New York City on the way to Boston or Long Island. 🛠️ Project Scope: Full restoration of two tunnel tubes damaged by Superstorm Sandy. 🚆 Service Impact: Planned with minimal disruptions; work will proceed one tube at a time. This project would not be possible without the support of our partners at Metropolitan Transportation Authority, NJ TRANSIT, Long Island Rail Road and the Biden-Harris Administration. We would also like to give a special thanks to Senator Schumer for his relentless support in making this project possible. Major milestone achieved: full funding for the Hudson Tunnel Project! And we’re thankful for the people who helped make this happen. A project of national significance, like the Hudson Tunnel Project, doesn’t happen without the help of many people. That’s why Amtrak Board Chair Tony Coscia, CEO Stephen Gardner, and EVP Capital Delivery Laura Mason joined Senator Schumer, Senator Booker, Governors Hochul and Murphy, Rep. Nadler, US DOT Deputy Secretary, Polly Trottenberg, FTA Acting Administrator Veronica Vanterpool and GDC CEO Kris Kolluri – and so many more stakeholders and Amtrak employees – yesterday to celebrate the full funding grant agreement for the Hudson Tunnel Project. This milestone signifies America’s commitment to transforming our infrastructure, reinvesting in our passenger rail, and ensuring a prosperous and sustainable future as a new Hudson River Tunnel will supercharge the rail connections across our region and to the nation, improving and expanding rail service in ways we’ve only been able to dream about in the past! #HudsonTunnelProject #Infrastructure
