Does your workplace allow you to be true to yourself? From a young age, Jhillika Kumar was inspired to build an inclusive world and place for her non-speaking, autistic brother to thrive. Now, she’s offering advice and guidance to communities of students and neurodivergent individuals and helping them find opportunities in the workforce through Mentra. Over the past week, I have had the absolute pleasure of meeting up with some incredible women at Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party on behalf of the AnitaB.org. Firstly I want to say thank you to Sheila Isbell and Thebither Michael for planning and setting up this event. It was incredible to be surrounded by such ambitious women in the tech industry and have a multitude of cultures and backgrounds represented which cultivated a welcoming environment and insightful discussion. It is so nice to be in environments in which people bring their full selves to the event and actively contribute to the conversation. And with being the only undergraduate at the event I greatly appreciated everyone providing me with advice for how I should navigate the early years of my career in tech. And thank you to Sheila Isbell, Francine Marquis, Safiya Koranteng, PMP, CSM, and Marci A. Owens for making sure that I got home safely after the event, I truly felt cared for and a part of a community. Nearing the end of the event Thebither happened to pull out the book “An Unsuitable Job for A Woman”, which is comical given that we were all women in the tech industry. And we are a living testament to proving that statement wrong.
