Team communication is essential for patient *and nurse* safety. Clear communication among healthcare professionals helps prevent errors and promote safety in the OR. The updated "Guideline for team communication" provides evidence-based recommendations that address how to: • Build a Culture of Safety: Foster an open environment where everyone feels comfortable speaking up about concerns. • Streamline Handoffs: Ensure clear and complete information transfer between caregivers throughout a patient's journey. • Implement a surgical safety checklist: Use cognitive aids, such as standard whiteboards, electronic whiteboards, computerized SSCs, or other emerging technology. • Utilize Communication Tools: Implement effective practices like briefings, time outs, and surgical safety checklists to double-check procedures and prevent mistakes. • And more! Safety isn’t a solo act—it’s a symphony of collaboration! 🎶 The AORN Journal, a member-exclusive publication, features the "Guideline for team communication" in its "Guidelines in Practice" article. 🎮 Game-based periop learning 🚀 retention to 75-90% compared to the 20-30% of traditional lectures. 5️⃣ tips to elevate the education game (pun intended) in your facility: 1️⃣ Look for Models – Find existing game-based activities and make them your own. Make it hands-on and create an escape room where learners use actual equipment they’ll need in real scenarios. 🕵️♀️ 2️⃣ Leverage Existing Content – Save time by converting your traditional educational materials into games. For example, turn one of your presentations into a Jeopardy-style game using your existing slides. 🎉 3️⃣ Start Small – No need to go big right away. Begin with simple topics that are easy to break down into hands-on activities. If you go the escape room route, create stations centered on one learning activity at a time that a team can tackle together. 🧩 4️⃣ Break Down Education Creation – Keep things organized with checklists and schedules. This way, creating game-based learning activities is a breeze. 📅✅ 5️⃣ Use Learner Feedback – Pre- and post-evaluations are gold mines for insights. Ask targeted questions to get actionable data on what works and what doesn’t. 📝 Adopt these strategies to overcome challenges and engage your periop teams in a dynamic, interactive way. Transform your learning approach and experience the benefits of higher retention and engagement! 🌟📚 Game On: https://bit.ly/4bEB2OB #Perioperative #Periop #ORNurse #Nursing #Nurses #NurseLife #Nurse

Facial Prep Fast Facts! Knowing the right facial prep for each procedure is key! Here's a quick guide for our periop rockstars: • Facial Lesion Removal: Start clean, work dirty! Prep the incision site first, then move outwards beyond the surgical area. (For eye procedures, check out AORN's eGuidelines+ ) • Nose Job? Prep the whole schnoz (including nostrils!), cheeks, forehead, and down to the jawline. Internal nose? Not usually included. • Mouth Matters: Prep the outside of the mouth and surrounding areas. Oral cavity prepped? Use a throat pack to avoid aspiration! • Tonsillectomy/Adenoidectomy: These are "clean" procedures, so no skin prep needed. • Ear Play: Prep the entire ear (including the back!), extending to the hairline, shoulders, and beyond the face's midline. Get all the details in the link, https://bit.ly/3WjSu6p, share with a periop colleague and be sure to tag #AORNStitch. #AORNStitch #surgerylife #perioperative #ORlife #nurse #nurselife #nurses #nursing #ORnurse

Just another Manic Monday? A study in the July issue of the AORN Journal looks at how busy operating rooms are on different days of the week. The research looks back at data to see if there were any differences in how much ORs are used each day. The study also explores why this might happen and how much it costs the hospital. • Mondays had the highest OR utilization rate (The overall average was 69.1% daily). • Mondays saved the day in terms of late starts---the fewest minutes lost were on Mondays. • Thursdays and Fridays tended to be the villains of efficiency. Takeaway: Perioperative leaders hold the compass to success. By monitoring OR utilization and identifying sources of variability, they can help chart the course towards consistency, slashing costs, and amplifying revenue. We want to know---are Mondays the busiest days at your facilities? How do you maximize OR utilization across the week? Is your team ready to SWITCH it up? A new study featured in the AORN Journal found that using a standardized hand off tool based on the SWITCH method (surgical procedure, wet supplies, instruments, tissue, counts, and questions) significantly improved key areas for nurses in the OR. It can enhance communication by covering important categories related to devices, personnel, and solutions. Nurses who used SWITCH reported feeling: ✅more satisfied with handoffs and ✅more confident in their abilities 👍 They also demonstrated better overall surgical nursing performance compared to those using traditional methods. This research suggests that implementing a standardized hand off tool like SWITCH can significantly enhance communication, teamwork, and patient safety in the OR. A standardized hand off tool isn’t just a game-changer; it’s a life-changer. Better communication means safer surgeries, satisfied nursing staff members, and improved patient outcomes. Have you used the SWITCH method to optimize hand offs? What are some other strategies that your facility uses? Read the abstract or full study: https://lnkd.in/gWCXrAac Not a member?
