This picture of wintery weather in the Netherlands sets the stage for a beloved Dutch December tradition: Sinterklaas Every December 5, the Netherlands gets ready to celebrate (the eve of) Sinterklaas. This holiday is believed to be based on the historical figure of Sint Nicolaas, or Saint Nicholas, a 4th century bishop from the South-Turkish town of Myra. Celebrations in honor of Sint Nicolaas gradually grew into a beloved tradition involving gifts and treats that would even continue under protestant rule. Elsewhere, Sint Nicolaas inspired other historical figures, including Santa Claus. Today, Dutch children know Sinterklaas to bring presents from his residence in Spain. His arrival by steam ship is met with great enthusiasm each year. From his arrival in the middle of November through Pakjesavond, the exchanging of gifts on December 5, children are allowed to leave out their empty shoe (traditionally a clog) once a week for a small gift. Hay and carrots are left in the shoe at night for Sinterklaas’ horse, and if you’re lucky, you receive a little something in return. Not too long ago, the holiday also included a healthy dose of fear as Sinterklaas would supposedly take those who misbehaved back to Spain in a burlap sack. For those that were good all year, that sack is filled with presents. While gift giving increasingly takes place at Christmas instead of Sinterklaas, the holiday remains popular with children and adults alike. Especially on a cold winter night, celebrating Sinterklaas brings families closer together across the country. ~ As shared by Applied EarthWorks, Inc. Since 1990 when the first Native American Heritage Month was proclaimed, November has been a month to reflect on our nation’s history, commemorate the contributions of Tribes, and celebrate the unique and widely diverse cultures of America’s First Peoples. Did You know? California is home to about 110 federally recognized tribes and an additional 81 that seek recognition in the Golden State. A short overview history of these groups can be found on the California Native American Heritage Commission website (https://lnkd.in/g2_wMd-z) Our efforts at Æ honor the history, culture, and legacy of Tribal nations and Indigenous communities across California - and throughout the United States.
