While not a surprise, this week is a discouraging week for many of our nation’s physicians. Yesterday, CMS released the CY 2025 Proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule that includes a 2.93% decrease to physician reimbursement. Meanwhile, reimbursement rates for outpatient hospitals consistently climb with inflation, including a 2.6% bump just this past week. Year after year, CMS is forced to cut payments rates due to antiquated statutory requirements and the failure of Congress to act. Since 2001, physician payment rates have declined 29% when adjusted for inflation. Congress must step in to provide both a short-term solution to alleviate this decrease for 2025, and build a sustainable, long-term solution to CMS’s ambulatory reimbursement model.
