The global alternatives marketplace is transforming, and firms are reengineering to attract new clients and introduce products while addressing the latest global rules and regulations. Brian Yegidis, our Head of Business Consulting, evaluated techniques for reengineering and transformation with Richa Kumar, a Managing Director at KPMG, Adam Menkes, Head of Business Development at Atlas Technica, Shelley Rosensweig, a Partner and Co-Head of Investment Management (NY) at Haynes Boone, and McAllister (Mac) Kirschner, our Chief Operating Officer, during a panel discussion, “Requiem for Reengineering: Scaling Up Operations to Align with Growth” at our Global Alternatives Summit last week in Miami. Increasingly, firms are rethinking how financial resources are allocated, choosing to outsource some functions that have traditionally been handled in-house. “We are being asked to support more than only the back office—books and records support—and continue through the middle office and into the client [investor] experience,” Mac said. Richa noted that when firms evaluate workflow and functions to outsource, “it is very important to look at the specific needs for the managers, which particular vendor is providing the services they want and how much control do they want.” Firms also can better prepare for a new paradigm by eliminating legacy infrastructure and “moving toward cloud technology,” Adam said. “You are giving yourself tremendous scale—plug-in and move on.” Involving legal throughout the transformation process—ranging from restructuring to the introduction of new products—can be essential to avoiding problems with regulators later. “It’s great to use the outsourced providers, but they should be used in conjunction with us, not in lieu of [a firm’s] lawyers,” Shelley said. #apartnershipbuiltaroundyou #MUFGaltssummit2023
