Highlighting a Recent Internal Medicine Case with Dr. Slead Teeter, a young Labrador, was referred to Dr. Slead, AVES Internist, for chronic urinary incontinence. Given her age, it was suspected that this condition was congenital, leading to the recommendation of a cystoscopy to evaluate her urinary tract. The diagnosis revealed that Teeter had an ectopic ureter, the most common congenital cause of incontinence in dogs. In this condition, the ureter (the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder) forms incorrectly, bypassing the urethral sphincter by tunneling through the bladder and urethra walls. Using a laser under cystoscopic guidance, Dr. Slead and the exceptional Internal Medicine Team at Austin Veterinary Emergency and Specialty (AVES) successfully removed the redundant tissue, repositioning the ureter’s opening back into the bladder and behind the urethral sphincter. This procedure often results in complete continence, and we are optimistic for a positive outcome for Teeter!
