How can Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling help you mitigate hazards from loss of containment scenarios at your facility? 💥🔥 CFD, a simulation tool that generates predictions based on fluid motion laws (i.e., conservation of mass, momentum, and energy), is frequently used for simulating the accidental release of flammables and toxics, as well as explosions. Although screening-level analyses (Facility Siting Studies and Quantitative Risk Analyses) are extremely powerful tools to help you understand the hazards associated with your facility, a CFD analysis can provide a more refined understanding of the “worst-case scenario” so you can take the necessary actions to mitigate risk. Typical use cases for a CFD analysis include: 💡 reducing the predicted impact distance of a postulated release by incorporating cloud interactions with equipment, terrain, and other obstacles; 💡 evaluating the efficacy of ventilation and gas detection/mitigation schemes to reduce flammable cloud sizes and blast loads; 💡 evaluating the likelihood of a deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) in real facility layouts; and 💡 evaluating the impact of buildings/obstructions on blast wave travel, focusing, and diffraction. BakerRisk utilizes several software packages, including an in-house CFD tool, Blast Wave Target Interaction (BWTI©), to simulate complex problems and find cost effective solutions for flammable, toxic, and explosion hazards.   In this video, BakerRisk’s Will Lowry shares how we use tools like these along with data from full-scale testing projects to provide clients with accurate CFD predictions for effective mitigation strategies and solutions. 📸 Candid moments with BakerRisk’s Wayne Repich, Murtaza Gandhi, and Naomi Alarcon, U.S. Consul General Douglass Benning, and fellow attendees at the Global Energy Transition Congress and Exhibition last week. We thank all those who were able to stop by the BakerRisk exhibit booth and discuss risk management strategies for low carbon energy solutions.  It was an honor to get to speak with fellow attendees and global leaders paving the way with low carbon energy goals. For many facilities transitioning to low carbon energy, hydrogen and hydrogen carriers are top of mind. But – is hydrogen the solution to low carbon energy goals? Let us know what you think in the comments! While process equipment at refineries and processing facilities are designed using codes to prevent and reduce the chance for failure and rupture, equipment can fail or become unreliable for its intended service due to the cyclic operating conditions, high pressures, corrosive conditions, and elevated temperatures. ⚠ Consequently, unplanned downtimes or failures may occur, or expensive repairs may be needed. 💸 Consider key elements of a good Asset Integrity Management Program - join Materials Engineering and Forensics experts Daniel Benac & Mike Nugent and Global BD Director Wayne Repich for their webinar, “Asset Integrity Programs in Support of the PSM Program for Egypt”, on July 30 at 1 PM Cairo, Egypt (UTC+3) / 5:00 AM Central Time (UTC-5). What will be covered: 💡 Why Asset Integrity Management (AIM) is needed  💡 Elements of a good Asset Integrity Management program  💡 The value of doing Damage Mechanism Reviews (DMRs)   💡 Considerations for potential service-induced damage mechanisms, such as ductile, brittle, or environmental-induced failures and the potential for damage during service 💡 Encourage investigations and trending of routine near-misses and precursor to failures Learn more about this webinar and register: https://lnkd.in/gTf7CYY5. #equipment #processsafety #materialsengineering #equipmentfailure #safety #refineries #plants #riskmanagement #BetterRiskManagementStartsHere

This just in... 📢 Janghwan (Justin) Kim & Peter Diakow, CFEI are incredibly photogenic. 📸 😎 Thanks to the Center for Hydrogen Safety Americas Conference for capturing and sharing some great moments! In case you missed Karen Vilas's topic (presented by Peter), "Hydrogen - Success By Design", it's not too late to request information on this topic! Enjoy a little preview of this paper below... "In recent years we have seen rapid growth in hydrogen markets, with many more projected projects in the next decade. While some of this growth is associated with companies that have established track records of hydrogen operations and robust process safety programs, there are also new entrants to the market with varying levels of experience relative to quantifying and mitigating risks associated with hydrogen operations. This is further complicated for companies lacking formal process safety programs and governmental regulations / industrial standards struggling to keep pace with the rapidly expanding hydrogen market. This presentation will introduce the CCPS book Guidelines for Integrating Process Safety into Engineering Projects and discuss how it can be applied to hydrogen related projects - even in cases when a facility and/or project is not covered by PSM regulation.  A case study will demonstrate how technical safety studies should move from conceptual screening in early design phases through to detailed modeling in late design/operations. This presentation will draw on years of hydrogen risk experience as well as experimental data from full-scale hydrogen explosion, dispersion, and jet fire testing to demonstrate the potential pitfalls of discounting a proactive approach to hazard/risk assessment and mitigation throughout the capital project lifecycle of Hydrogen Economy-related infrastructure." Discover how to manage risks with hydrogen and hydrogen carriers – and reach out for more information on Karen’s timely paper: https://lnkd.in/gZ_7Wuhh. What else should hydrogen players keep in mind for effective process safety strategies?
