About us

Established in 1754, Bedford County is the currently the fifth largest county by land area in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with a population of more than 80,000. The county has seen a 25 percent increase in population since 2000, according to census data. Bedford County is located centrally to the cities of Lynchburg (to the east) and Roanoke (to the west). Our placement is in the “Up to 150,000” population category. In 2023, Bedford County’s ranking in the same survey was #9.   • ✨ Bedford County Employee Appreciation Event 2024 ✨ Employees enjoyed lunch, cornhole, dancing, and more at our beautiful Falling Creek Park. But the highlight of the afternoon was the annual tug-of-war competition. Four teams faced off to win the coveted trophy. This year, The Red Tape Titans (comprised of employees from Economic Development, Public Works, and Community Development) came out on top! Bedford County has employees across 21 departments. It's such a fun time when everyone comes together for this annual tradition!

  • Today, the Bedford County Finance Department celebrated Accountant Michael Carter and his wife Danielle as they count down the days to the arrival of twins (one boy and one girl)! They already have a little girl at home as well. We are praying for a smooth arrival for the newest members of their family in the coming weeks!

  • Life can get busy - so today, we brought the health experts directly to our employees! Our Employee Wellness Day included biometric screenings and consultations with HealthWorks, Centra's mobile mammography van, and nutrition workshops with Lee Sanstead. Staff were also invited to join a group walk around Bedford at lunch.
