    Experts argue that overreliance on big donors is dangerous for nonprofits’ long-term financial health and robust civil society. “When you’re a kid, you can eat all the sugar you want,” BWF CEO Joshua Birkholz says. “But at some point, our body catches up with us, and we become insulin resistant. So now, we’re just living off the candy — that’s the high-net-worth donors. And the insulin resistance is in front of us. It’s not happening right now. But we’re eventually going to run out of the major donors that had 20-year relationships with us. And then we’re going to be dependent on the entrepreneurial philanthropists that come out of nowhere.
