August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month and a great time to remind parents and caregivers that taking steps to provide optimal eye health for children is crucial, as vision plays a fundamental role in their overall development, learning, and quality of life. Early detection of vision issues can significantly impact a child's future, and understanding the appropriate stages for eye screenings is essential for parents, educators, and healthcare providers. A recent report by the American Academy of Ophthalmology provides a comprehensive breakdown of recommended eye screenings at each stage of early childhood, who should conduct them, and what to look for to detect potential vision issues. Early detection and treatment is pivotal to offsetting delays in diagnosis and management that can lead to permanent vision loss, impacting a child’s quality of life and educational achievements. To raise awareness during Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, Beyond Blindness and our partners, including Marshall B. Ketchum University and Family Support Network, are offering free vision screenings and examinations across Orange County in August. Building Bright Futures for Children
About us
Beyond Blindness, formerly Blind Children’s Learning Center, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to empower children with visual impairments and other disabilities to achieve their fullest potential. Areas of service include Early Intervention, Education + Enrichment, and Family Support (outlined below), which help children, no matter their abilities, live full and rewarding lives. The Beyond Blindness team embraces a people-first approach and values family, connection, impact, inclusion, stewardship, and optimism. Early Intervention Early Intervention services provide comprehensive support and resources to children ages 0 to 3 to overcome early obstacles, meet key milestones, and establish a foundation for each child to reach their fullest potential. Home-based and center-based services offer vision stimulation and therapy services that help to minimize developmental delays and optimize growth towards an independent future while toddler classrooms, located onsite, focus on healthy development and school readiness. Education + Enrichment Through Beyond Blindness’ Education + Enrichment services, students receive itinerant (within their public school classroom) education support with a dedicated Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI), Orientation & Mobility training (O&M), and the opportunity to attend fun and valuable summer camps. Additional Education + Enrichment services include assistive technology training, peer groups, expanded core curriculum, and life-skills development. Family Support Our Family Support services enable Beyond Blindness to be a resource for families of children with visual impairments and other disabilities throughout the child’s entire journey of care. These services not only offer necessary and comforting support to parents, grandparents, siblings, children and more in the form of education, training and inclusive family events, but they also help provide guidance, a sense of community, and more.

Early intervention is a critical pillar of our Journey of Care™ at Beyond Blindness. We are excited to celebrate the introduction of a landmark bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that will establish grants for states and communities to improve children's vision and eye health through a coordinated system of care. Called the Early Detection of Vision Impairments in Children (EDVI) Act, it aims to ensure all children will receive screening and care that will help overcome any obstacles and delays caused by a visual impairment. While there are several public health programs that offer support for other areas of pediatric health, this will be the first federally funded program addressing vision and equitable eye care for children. As a leader in early intervention for Orange County children with visual impairments and other disabilities, we believe this is an important step forward in delivering quality care to every family in need. It will not only provide more opportunities for early detection of vision concerns, but also reduce disparities in eye health and remove barriers to care that will put infants and toddlers on the path to achieving their fullest potential.
