  • Psychological safety at work means… a) Everyone is nice to each other all the time b) There are never any layoffs c) Managers need to become therapists/psychiatrists d) None of the above . . . . Answer: d) None of the above Let’s break it down: 😊 Everyone is nice to each other all the time 👉 If you’re 100% nice all the time, that means you’re not giving honest feedback or expressing when things aren’t going well. That doesn’t mean you get to be a jerk all day. It means that speaking up is part of the culture. 🎂 There are never any layoffs 👉 Layoffs are something that most companies have to go through at some point in time. At a place that has psychological safety, you speaking up doesn’t put your job at jeopardy. In an even more transparent world, employees may be taken through the decision making process so that the layoffs aren’t a shock. But that’s a topic for another post. 🧠 Managers need to become therapists/psychiatrists (to their direct reports) 👉 The term psychological safety is “a belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns or mistakes and that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking.” (Dr. Amy Edmonson) So as a manager, you don’t need to become a therapist - but if someone lets you know they need a few personal days - you can check in and ask if there’s anything that needs to be adjusted regarding workload. Your direct report will know that you don’t need to know what the personal day is for, you’re genuinely making sure conditions at work aren’t burning them out. For #fourthofjuly, we consider the word “independence” along with the following oft-repeated quote: "Nobody's free until everybody's free." - Fannie Lou Hamer Independence day in 1776 celebrated independence from England. And it would be centuries before this meant something tangible for women, Black enslaved people, queer people, disabled people, and Indigenous people. Although 248 years have passed, many of us don't feel independent from oppression. In reflection of Independence day, we ask you to consider: Who was the Declaration of Independence meant to impact?  And, now, especially with elections on the horizon - who do we need to impact the most? We would argue that it is our future generation.   • As today is the anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, we want to echo what many others before us have said: Legal acts are not an end, they are a beginning. The activism, blood, sweat, and tears that got us to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, needs us to continue with activism, blood, sweat, and tears in order to make it last. Activism, as you know, can take many forms. Sometimes, it takes considering the context of how we live - our communities and our circle of impact. Our guest, Keith Hinderlie Smith, looks at how we can change the world through the lens of social justice, education, and psychology: “Creating a community of inclusion and belongingness (I guess), relies on the level of psychological safety that the least deserved feel. And in a lot of schools, the least served often are people of color, people that identify as LGBTQ+, people that don’t have the economic means, as (sort of) the most wealthy.   • How do I talk someone out of bigotry? How do I encourage someone to have greater acceptance of others? Researchers and activists have tested out a technique called, "deep canvassing," on matters such as immigration, abortion access, and LGBTQ+ rights. Deep canvassing involves ✅Asking someone for their opinion on a topic ✅Listening non-judgmentally ✅Asking if they know anyone in the impacted community and if they can relate to the person's story ✅Facilitating the conversation so they can reflect on a personal experience when they might have felt something similar to a person of a marginalized community ✅Sharing your own stories Dave Fleischer, the LGBTQ rights organizer who developed the technique said, "It is stories, not facts, that are most compelling to people when they’re changing their minds."   • What is one commitment I can make to reduce bias in my interactions with my colleagues and neighbors?  - When you spot yourself thinking of a stereotype, prepare a counter stereotype so that you have a way to redirect your thoughts, words, and actions when you’re interacting with colleagues.  - For example, while watching a movie that portrays Black people as unintelligent, you could think of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Barack Obama, Neil deGrasse Tyson, or intelligent, personally known Black friends or acquaintances. -Thinking of counter-stereotypic people provides concrete examples that demonstrate the inaccuracy of stereotypes and helps you come up with a counter stereotype in the moment when you need it later More personal bias reduction tools at our website - link in the comments

  • For #Juneteenth we'd like to share something from our co-ED. I (Dr. Linet Mera) learned about the Grandmother of Juneteenth, Ms. Opal Lee this year. As a 12 year-old her family's home in Forth Worth was stormed by a mob of white rioters. "It was Juneteenth, which is a day in Texas which we knew we were all free. It had significance that people were storming and burning our place down." This is but a tiny slice of the many experiences Opal lived and witnessed and the activists, neighbors, family, and friends which inspired her to push for Juneteenth to be observed. In 2016, at 89 years of age, she walked 2.5 miles each day from Fort Worth, TX to Washington, DC symbolizing the 2.5 years that it took between the Emancipation Proclamation and June 19, 1863. Her bold action brought attention to her relentless push for June 19th to be recognized as a national holiday. Soon after, her story was picked up by major news in 2020 and she was able to see Juneteenth declared a holiday on June 18, 2021. - I encourage all our followers to learn about and support Juneteenth celebrations in their community and workplaces. Also, please continue focusing on Black joy, amplifying Black voices, buying from Black businesses, and hiring/mentoring Black leaders. We have a long way to go, and we need everyone in.
