For children and adolescents in Gaza, designated safe spaces that offer psychosocial support and recreational activities help to engage and provide support at a time of tumult and uncertainty. Just this week, adolescents taking part in CRS programs helped to design murals to communicate about the explosive remnants of war, with guidance on messaging from the United Nations.

In Tigray, Ethiopia, Sesen’s resilience shines through these challenging times. She is a 28-year-old woman expecting her first child amidst the region’s hardships. Past conflicts and a current drought have made it impossible to grow food, buy food, and access water. “The main challenge in this area is hunger. There are so many people in need of food,” says Sesen. As part of the Joint Emergency Operation (JEOP), funded by USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance CRS employs vulnerability-based targeting (VBT). This method utilizes real-time data collection to identify those in dire need to ensure they receive the necessary food aid. Being pregnant, Sesen was selected to receive food deliveries—wheat, yellow split peas (pulse), and vegetable oil. “I am healthy and getting enough food, but I cannot work,” says Sesen. In a context of limited resources, Sesen exemplifies the community’s strength and compassion: ”Collaboration and understanding are common norms here. Therefore, I may share what I have with my neighbors or others facing similar challenges." USAID Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, where 3.9 million people in Tigray do not have enough to eat, CRS is implementing the Joint Emergency Operation (JEOP), funded by USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance and USAID Ethiopia. Today, we’re going to tell you more about the JEOP. ⬇️ The goal of JEOP is to provide food, cash and nutrition assistance to food insecure households. This support is being provided across 5 regions and one city administration in Ethiopia, where people are facing severe food shortages, due to conflict, drought, internal displacement, and climate change. The JEOP’s main job is to make sure that families can get enough food when they need it, acting as safety net for those who are struggling the most—especially pregnant and breastfeeding women, and children under 5 suffering from malnutrition. In the last six months, over 1.7 million men and women have been supported with 178,000 metric tons of wheat, pulse and vegetable oil.
