Businesses face increasing pressure from various groups—including investors, customers, and employees—to set climate targets backed by detailed implementation plans. In response, an increasing number of large companies are setting long-term goals to reduce GHG emissions, especially “net-zero” or “carbon neutrality” commitments for the year 2050 or sooner. The details of the targets and corresponding transition plans vary but are generally more ambitious than previous corporate commitments. C2ES staff Nicholas Franco and Rosalie Ruetz authored a chapter on corporate climate commitments for the "Handbook of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation." 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ebNRXsY5 More C2ES insights on #lowcarbontransition planning coming soon...

As record-breaking heat waves sweep across the country this summer, the dangers of extreme temperatures are clearer than ever—and so are the costs. The Atlantic Council estimates extreme heat costs the U.S. $100 billion annually in GDP, potentially doubling by 2030. I recently spoke with Yahoo Finance about the significant impacts of extreme heat on the U.S. economy, and how companies are responding. We need more action from both the private and public sectors to build a more resilient grid and economy while cutting the emissions that are driving up global temperatures.

Last week, C2ES President Nathaniel Keohane invited audiences at Seminars at Steamboat to "flip the script" and consider how capitalism can help address the climate crisis. To do that, we'll need to harness one of the most powerful economic tools for a low-carbon transition: markets. Last weekend, communities along the Front Range of Colorado experienced a record-breaking heat wave, with temperatures rising over 100 degrees. To prepare for extreme heat and other climate impacts, C2ES's Climate Resilient Communities Accelerator (CRCA)—now in its second year—is advancing efforts to boost wildfire and heat #resilience in Colorado's North Front Range. This week, C2ES is heading to the region to hold a workshop to accelerate the climate resilience efforts happening within the North Front Range, with a focus on resilience hubs and microgrids. Microgrids are small-scale power grids that can operate independently or in conjunction with an area’s main electrical grid, and resilience hubs are trusted gathering spaces enhanced to provide safety for community members. ☀️ In a new blog post, Climate Resilience Intern Jennie Rhodes explores how this event connects to broader work to build stronger, safer communities in the region. #ResilientNorthFrontRange #ClimateResilience 🔗 https://lnkd.in/et-bQVYT

Despite the ambitious goals set in 2015 with the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) and the Paris Agreement, our current trajectory suggests we are falling short. Urgent action is needed. ⚡ 🌏 Tomorrow, C2ES Vice President for International Strategies Kaveh Guilanpour will moderate a panel at the United Nations headquarters on effective policies and financing instruments for enabling synergistic climate and SDG action. This panel is part of a High Level Political Forum Special Event that will be livestreamed on Tues, July 16th at 10:30AM ET from the UN HQ. Last month, representatives from fourteen companies in technology, communications, electric utilities, insurance, and engineering joined members of five federal agencies for a roundtable discussion on advancing #climateresilience in the United States. This convening, hosted by C2ES, Resilience Rising, and the Resilience Roadmap project at The Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability identified levers that federal agencies and companies are using to advance climate resilience and a broad desire for a shared action agenda to accelerate these efforts. In her latest blog, C2ES Director of Climate Resilience and Sustainability Amy Bailey shares insights from the convening, highlighting the need to align public and private efforts to build resilience. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e86Dficr
