Yesterday we met Scott Ellis, P.E. of HDR and Joseph Cornell of Jacobsen|Daniels at the airport and they took us on a fascinating journey! 13 members of Construction Management Association of America (CMAA)'s Three Rivers Chapter spent the afternoon walking the site of the Pittsburgh International Airport Terminal Modernization Program with Scott and Joe. They discussed goals, progress, and the tricky logistics for this project, as well as briefing us on the Nature-Technology-Community (NaTeCo) design theme. We saw everything from siren-sensing emergency lights and outdoor green spaces, to the prominent spot reserved for “Pittsburgh,” the beloved mobile that Alexander Calder created in 1958. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge with us! There’s another 13 we’d like to mention too: Friday the 13th of September. That’s the FORE-tuitous date of “Good Luck on the Links,” our golf outing! Click below to learn more and register to attend or sponsor the event. https://lnkd.in/eU3zk9Pw #CMAA #CMAA3R #PIT #SiteTour

"We're not saving the world." https://lnkd.in/ea646BzT Across the topics of safety, shortages, and communications at our panel discussion last week, the overarching message from our panelists was that we need to keep humanity and humility at the forefront while working on construction projects together. We're most successful when we consider each other's roles, responsibilities, viewpoints, pressures, needs, and goals--and not just as parties but also as individual people. For just one example, as part of our safety discussion Alexander Dick talked about the mental-health crisis and disproportionately-high suicide rates in our industry. He stressed the importance of ensuring that workers are able to put their full focus on the tasks at hand. "We're not saving the world" is how he self-deprecatingly began his comment, but then he went on to describe, wisely, the real-world impact that a distracted or unwell worker can have on the safety of a construction team and their project's end users. Safety plans that are carefully crafted and executed save lives, and some say that to save a life is to save the world. Many thanks to our panelists and moderator for giving of their time and effort so that we could benefit from the experience and expertise they've shared! Rachael Beam, Chief Engineering Officer, Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority Alexander Dick, Owner, Dick Building Company, LLC Heather Dodson, P.E., Senior Manager, Brown and Caldwell Thomas Prusak, Vice President, Hatch Laura Nee, CEO, VPO Construction Project Management Software & Services We'd also like to thank our Silver Sponsor, Wade Trim, for supporting our organization and our scholarship fund.
