The Davenport Fire Department and Chief Carlsten had the opportunity to introduce the eight newest firefighters to the City Council and community during a swearing-in ceremony. The eight firefighters are part of two separate recruit academies. Three firefighters started with the City at the end of October 2023, while the other five started in January 2024. Both groups have attended an eight-week in-house training academy, achieving various State certifications, and gaining the experience needed to be assigned to a 24-hour shift. We had some visitors yesterday! Our friends at Birdie's Nest stopped by for their field trip and received a tour of City Hall. The kiddos spoke with staff about their jobs. learned what each department does, and even got to sit in the Mayor's seat!

Happy Friday, Davenport! We have some exciting news. DOHSE SPLASH AND PLAY IS NOW OPEN! We celebrated this exciting day by inviting kids from the Davenport Community Schools Hayes Summer Learning Program to help us kick off the ribbon cutting and opening of this awesome amenity to the west end. The kiddos enjoyed hot dogs, snow cones, and being the first to experience the new Dohse. After countless hours of planning and work, we are excited to see this space being used again. Dohse was once a swimming pool in the west end of Davenport, being a staple of summer for the community. Unfortunately, it closed due to infrastructure challenges. Over the past few years, Davenport Parks and Recreation staff created a plan and gathered input from residents to once again make this location a place to be during the summer. Weather permitting, Dohse Splash and Play will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. during Davenport Community School summer breaks.

Yesterday, the Davenport Police Department had the honor of hosting a retiree luncheon where several generations of Davenport Police Officers gathered at the station to enjoy a meal, fellowship, and learn about department updates and initiatives. For decades, Davenport Police have been protecting and serving our #Davenport community and today, we had hundreds of years of service and sacrifice gathered in one place!

This summer, Davenport Police partnered with Davenport Parks and Recreation to distribute 250 complimentary pool passes to the youth in our community! Yesterday, Corporal Ryckeghem and Officer Montero had the pleasure of handing out these passes to some amazing kids, inviting them to enjoy a summer of fun and safety at the pool. Have a blast, stay cool, and remember, DPD is always there for you, Davenport!

Yesterday, June 19, 2024, the Friends of MLK held their grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting for MLK Park. A plan that has been in the making, has finally come to life! During the celebration, we heard from various supporters of the project, watched moving performances, and learned a bit of history. This park is a wonderful addition to the community that commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and preserves the important and rich Black history in Davenport. We are grateful to everyone who had the passion and vision to make this project a reality.

Recently, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach announced that Davenport Parks and Recreation's Taylor Schneider, Horticulture and Environmental Educator, has earned the recognition of Certified Professional Guide! Professional Guide Certification candidates complete a training program of best practices to deliver quality experiences to visitors. The final certification process is conducted at each individual’s place of work, where they must effectively demonstrate the professional guide practices most appropriate for their unique organization or attraction. As a knowledgeable and passionate individual on the Parks and Recreation team, Taylor continues to deliver great experiences within her programs and tours! 👏
